I’d make another private path just for myself until the rest of the users have no option but to help pay. If they choose to take me to court, they can’t take blood out of a turnip nor can they squeeze pennies from a dead man.
I would dearly love to do this, but unfortunately, it isn't practical. I'd let the bridge & road go to hell in a heartbeat if my wife and I didn't need to use it.

This scenario plays out again and again across America. I too have free loader neighbors who won't pay their share of materials, never mind the fuel, labor, and equipment costs for road maintenance.
I'm calling it quits after 25 yrs of maintaining my road.

A cautionary tale about checking out how we will be tethered to our neighbors by shared facilities, like it or not. I just noticed a question on a real estate sellers' disclosure was, "do you share a private road?" Also maybe questions about shared private sewers and water supplies.

IIRC, before that Surfside condo pancaked, the residents couldn't agree on fixing the inspection defects. Before I'm ever forced into a condo, I will read the board minutes as well as see how much money is accrued for maintenance.

I found out in my military service that if you do a dirty difficult job well, you will get all the dirty difficult jobs that are available.
Not just in the military.... also in corporate life 🤪

In English you call it jack of all trades. In eastern Dutch we call it the devil-chaseaway..
