I have a JD 790 with a JD 421 loader and JD #7 backhoe and love it dearly. It is a fine machine. And yet I wonder.

I saw an L3400 hydro yesterday and it was sweet. I have an L4300 gear tractor with ag tires for row crop things so I am familiar with the line but I wonder what the L3400 is llike and how it would compare to the JD 790.
Anyone have any info or comparison on this?

I think a better comparison would be the L2800 and not the L3400. In my mind the L3400 has it hands down over the 790.

The JD 790 a nd L2800 compare quite well. I believe that the L2800 has slightly higher capacities - 3pt and loader. That said all in all, pretty close.

The L3400 has an advantage in HP (along with the 3pt and loader) capacties.

Where the L2800/L3400 have the JD 790 beat (and in my opinion this is why the JD 790 isn't competing with them as well as it could), is the optional simple mechanical hydrostat transmission. Many a tractor buyer that went for the low end / simple no frills machine (me included) took the JD 790 out of the running when we found out it did not have a hydrostat compared to the L2800/L3400 which do.

Personally, if I was JD, instead of cooking up the JD3203 - which at best is going to have marginal sales since it is so close to the 3120/3320 in price, should have gotten Yanmar add a simple mechanical hydrostat to the JD790.

I just purchased an L2800 last week after considering the 790. The hydrostat is great. The 790 and L2800 (gear drive) were priced the same and the hydrostat added $1,000.00. I agree that the weight and lift capacities listed were a significant percentage higher for the L2800. I paid $15,900 for the L2800 Hydrostat with LA463 FEL. Both had 0% financing and I think the warranty may be slightly longer on the 790 3 yrs or 2000 hrs compared to 2yrs with an extra yr on the drivetrain on the L2800 or 1500 hrs.

This is early thinking right now but I might look to trade the JD 790 TLB for a Kubota L2800 or L3400 TLB. I really like the JD 790 but the hydro, extra weight and capacities are appealing.
Thanks everyone for the comparison.

Gotta tell you, I really don't think the advantage in capacities would be enough to cause me to trade if I were in your shoes ... but thats just me. You sure you don't want to take the opportunity to go up to one of the Grand L models? I think with a LA724 loader a GL3540 with HST would be a worthwhile upgrade.

I have an L4300 already with ag tires for row crop so the need for me is a small tractor -loader-backhoe to do work in the yard and odd jobs around the area.
