You mean you still place a chainsaw on the ground with foot in the trigger guard........say it aint so.
What my stihl manual says to do.

I drop start my Stihls. Friend of mine doesn't have the arm strength and grip to do that so he sets his on the ground as the Stihl manual says to do.

I have always used the "on the ground" method with my 35 year old Stihl.
I just turned 77, so am going to revise the method.
I do not use any wood for heat.
Coming soon: 40V or 80V saw by "Greenworks"
Stihl will be retained,..... in semi retirement.

I ground start the saw if it's cold. After the first start I brace the handle against my leg. I used to drop start hot saws but this year I actually read that part of the Stihl manual and they suggest the leg brace method instead. It's safer and gives me an easier or stronger pull than drop starting.

"Any kind of oil will do" - before our Stihl 031AV was deemed "unrepairable" and became mine (crooked shop, I think, it took me 5 minutes to reset the pull cord), my mom and her handyman ran 30W instead of bar oil... and there was always a puddle of oil in the bottom of the saw case when you took it out to use it. I run bar oil, and the case stays dry, and the chain's been happy for the last few years.

Coincidence? I don't think so.

What my stihl manual says to do.

I'm quite sure all chainsaw manuals say start saw on ground, less chance of getting cut I suppose. I always start my 550xp at the waist, on the ground is just to awkward for me

You'll never touch that stihl again if you buy a 40-80 volt. It will be permanently retired!
