How to remove fallen tree from pond

The fish and critters will appreciate the tree where it is and you might even get some birds to roost in it.

Like Murph said, Pics we need pics!:)

Difficult choices.

I'd pay someone else to top and limb it. IN THE POND, then, if feasible and without RISK of Death, Drowning or Dismembermant (sp?), perhaps you can get the clean trunk out of the water.

Big tree, bad location, water... too much risk for me. IMHO

Keep us posted. Best of luck.

I'm with the leave it there crowd. Good structure and cover for fishing.
Probably already has leaves. If you leave it a year, they'll come off and reduce the weight by about a ton. On the other hand, the tree will sink deeper into the mud over that time. I'd lop off any exposed branches first to reduce the weight.

Levitate it out.
Clear your mind must be.

We had a big Oak fall in our pond...I have a friend who is a tree surgeon...he came over and wrapped a huge rope around a standing oak tree about 15 ft. from the bank and then tied the rope to the base of the fallen tree and then used his truck to back up and pull the tree little by little out of the pond / he would pull a few feet then cut a section off and roll it out of the way on the bank and then do it over and over , each time repositioning the rope ..until the tree was out and cut up for firewood...Worked for us.

We had a similar problem getting a 80 foot tall poplar tree out of our lake. I had a 150 foot piece of Blue Water II static rope left over from the days when I belonged to a mountain rescue group. Real expensive about $1.20 a foot but really strong. It is 11 mm and has double twisted cabled sheath strands as well as double twist cabled core strands and about a 7300 lb tensile rating. Tied one end to a chain wrapped around the log and the other to my jeep. Pulled it to the shore ok and then about three feet thru the muck and then it stopped dead. I could not pull it any further. My dad suggested a rig to lift it up as it was pulled.. I think he called it a jib pole but am not sure about the name. It was two 10 foot 6X6s lashed together at the top with the base ends about 6 foot apart. Sorta like an inverted Vee. The rope went over the top and the Vee was tilted toward the log and then pulled by the jeep. It caused the end of the log to lift up and move a couple feet in. The Vee was re-positioned and the process repeated several times until enough was on shore to cut off. This process was repeated until we were done. Took my brother and I the entire day to get it in from the lake.

Current game plan is come-a-long. Dunno if winch is feasible. Never owned a winch so not familiar with their operation. Aren't they electrically powered and therefore required to be attached to a vehicle? Are any available that use 120AC (I have a generator) and could be attached via chain to a tree?
Yes to both inquires. BTW, how deep in your pond - the gradient level? I agree with others that have suggested hauling it to the bank and cutting into sections. It will definitely lighten the load.

Pics we need pics!

Oakey Dokey.

There is no root ball involved. The tree snapped apart approximately 15' above ground level. The bottom portion (the stump) is still standing. Plan on using it as the anchor for the come-a-long so hopefully it's still strong enough. As you can see the tree lost much of its lower bark and was in the process of dying. The center of the tree was rotten and that's what caused it to snap. Measured the stump and it's circumference is 80" so the diameter is 25". My diameter guesstimate of 36" wasn't very accurate.

The top portion (the canopy) is obviously rotten. This may be a factor when trying to pull it out as it may just crumble. Will know more when I start cutting it up. The part laying on the bank has a diameter of 18" to 23" and length of 11'. When that is cut off, the total weight to be initially pulled will be reduced considerably.

The pond is one acre. Don't have a boat so don't know for sure how deep it is. The tree fell in the shallow end so would guess it's around 6-8' there. Here are a few pics taken from opposite side of the pond.

When I was taken the pics these guys came out of the woods and expressed displeasure with the tree being in "their" pond! :)

Really appreciate all the suggestions so far. The come-a-long is suppose to be delivered late tomorrow (5/31) and we'll see what happens probably Saturday unless it rains.
