How to murder sub-terrainian rodents!

Our mini dachshund used to take care of our infestations in the yard. He ran a tight ship too Only issue, was keeping the yard smooth. Depending on the critter you could end up with a cavern in the yard or a ditch following a mole trail. Then I would have to run around with the tractor and box blade and fill in the "weiney traps" as my wife lovingly referred to them as

Well, its been about ten years or more since I last ran my pocket gopher trap line. Now when I mow there are these "dusty explosions" as I run over their mounds.

Been running the trap line eight days - eleven pocket gophers caught.

I fought moles for about thirty years before I finally won. Tried just about anything except small nuclear warheads under portable concrete domes.... Then I won...... I moved....

None of the dogs I've ever had would pay any attention to the gophers. Several of the barn cats, over the years, would lay at the gopher mounds and wait for hours. They occasionally caught one. Their main diet was mice. Cats always had a dish of dry cat food that the magpies enjoyed also. Cat occasionally caught a magpie and ate it - ugh.

We have 2 of those dachies... They do LOVE to dig (and are relentless in their pursuit).

When I was young on the dairy farm in Minnesota we use to trap pocket gophers and they had a bounty so we got 75 cents for a pair of front legs. Some times the little varmints would chew their leg off to get out of the trap so we would have to keep that leg until the next one that chewed their leg off so we would have a pair to turn in. They would pack their hole shut when caught and when we would pull them out they were mad and raise cane. All the farmers from miles around would want us to trap them. I don't think we ever hurt the population of gophers.

My tractor dog was relentless on moles. He was always digging and would eat them whole when caught.

Yes, Sis.... I guess I am a wuss....... [ It was also a little about retiring and wanting to get out in the country, the hustle/bustle, with some elbow room.... but those little ^$#^%$#^ creatures kicked my butt..!!!! I have nightmares about them tunneling X amount of feet each day heading for my new property... to show up someday circling my yard... It's only 200 miles, and I know they are coming.... ]
