I have a 4 1/2 inch by 24 inch double acting cyl. off a dozer. looks to be in good shape. I'm going to use it on a splitter. Piston moves in and out good and snugly, but I get dirty dusty oil out of one end. Been pouring in wd40 and sloshing it around and driving piston in and out with air, but can't get it to come out clear. It is a tierod type. Is there any problem with taking it apart to clean? And what should I torque the nuts back up to? Thanks, Larry

I would take it apart, and replace the O-rings and piston seals while your in there.

Larry,
Take it apart and clean it. If you are going to reuse the seals, wash everything in a solution of Dawn dishwashing detergent and hot water. I wouldn't use brakleen or any harsh chemicals or parts cleaners if you plan on re-using any of the seals. Blow dry with compressed air, and assemble with hyd oil on the seals and o-rings. I'm going to guess that the tie rod bolts are either 7/16" or 1/2". I would find a torque chart and torque to recommended torque for whatever size you have.
Good luck, Andy.
