Our S&R team just spent 4 days working with cadaver dogs in the Wash. mudslide. Amazing creatures.....they performed admirably, heroically and would not stop without physically being removed. They really were our eyes in the field.......

Growing up, when raking hay or baling a field out on the back fields, didn't matter if was a 1/2 hour job or a 3 hour job, somehow my dog would know when I was on the last windrow and would come out to the field to escort the tractor back to the barn.

My current dog likes to go with me to my friends house, who has 5 dogs and gets excited when he "knows" we are going. Somehow he knows when I'm going to go. And first I thought he might be clued by the phone ringing (my friend calling) and then leaving, but it doesn't matter if I talked to my friend and arranged a meeting hours or days before, somehow he knows the difference between me putting on my jacket and hat to go to the woodshed versus going to my friends. I don't know how.

My little Boston, Lucy, can tell where I'm going by which keys I take of the rack. If I pick up my shop keys, she can be sleeping in the bedroom and she will meet me at the back door on my way out.

My old Golden Retriever who passed away at 14yo about 1-1/2 years ago was the smartest dog ive ever had. He would know if an item was in a place it shouldnt be. He would come up to me with something in his mouth and start prancing around. when i would ask him for it, hed drop it at my feet. He found my keys and my cell phone on the road in my back yard before. He also picked up any strap paper or trash and bring it to me. he must have been a garbage collector in a previous life.

He also hated the fact that my other golden retriever LOVED to play catch. i think he thought it was degrading. He used to steal all her rubber balls and hide them. At one time a neighbor came over with a paper bag full of rubber balls. she told me that My dog was coming over to her house all the time and leaving them at her door.

Yep, our Chihuahua is pretty smart. It's just amazing how well she's trained her humans to open and close doors on command, lift her onto and off the sofa, prepare her meals, and take her to the park, and nearly anything else she wants. If she's outside and comes to the door and can see one of us through the glass, she'll never bark, but will stand there staring at us, and if that doesn't work, she'll try scratching on the door. But if neither of us are in sight when she comes to the door, she barks, and she's sure loud for a little dog. And if I'm in here on the computer, and she wants something, she'll come and stand in the doorway, will never bark at me, but will just make little chirping sounds to get my attention and dance around to let me know she wants me to follow her to do whatever she's wanting at the moment.

But in spite of the Chihuahua reputation for being snappish little dogs, she's the only dog I've ever known that never learned to growl or snarl. She loves everyone; just looking for new friends all the time. If you hurt her, she'll try to get away, but she will not bite or fight.

I'm not sure how smart our four year old poodle is. I do know she has me well trained.
