Been tilled before with the walk behind tiller. A few Yrs. and a few POS. briggs and Staton Sears walk behinds and a few With the RS1400. First turn of the Yr. 1 pass. Done Perfect. She seeded or planted the Frame Grove and raked over the loose soil. Sweet!! nothing to it.She's was in her late 60's. I think the lip went up to her husband after finding without a doubt how much better and easier it was.

my little Mitsubishi MT20D was smaller than yours. It easily handled a 5' RS1400 Yanmar tiller. Import tractor suppliers usually have lots of used tillers to sell. Was told a lot of tractors they imported came wilth them. I bought my 5' for $650.. was in great condition and like new tines.

Do you have to break the soil up before rototilling? Of course not. But there are advantages. The chisel teeth will fracture the soil deeper than the tiller gets to and that helps with later root growth. It also helps the rototiller in later passes because the soil is already fractured, so you do fewer passes. There is such a thing as over tilling the soil. With both implements, don't over do it on a single pass.

If this is a one time thing, I would be tempted to do a few passes with the rippers on the box blade, level it and call it good. Especially if I had bone on bone joints.

However, if you plan on other rototilling, I would definitely get one. I loved our Troybuilt, but my current tractor mounted rototiller runs circles around it for ease, speed and effectiveness. The only reason I would keep the Troy built is if you have something really narrow that needs rototilling.

All the best,

Peter
I was going to bring this up. If you catch the soil just right you can get by with just rippers on a box blade. I have ripped part of my garden in clay soil before and then planted it. I took a shovel in each plants location when I put plants in and broke it up a little bit in a loamy clay planting grass I think you could get by just with the box teeth if you do it when the soil is moist.

I'm gonna continue looking for a used tiller but am not having much luck. I did find one 200 miles and one ferry ride each way for 200 bucks. And I would have been up for the 6 hours of driving. Take a friend and go for a drive, it would be fun. But from the pictures it looks to be only about 3 feet wide. Plus it looks to have only 1/2 of the driveshaft, part of the top link attachment point is missing, and there is no cover. The missing cover is really dangerous for me. Even when not rotating. I have vertigo, I've had it for over 30 years so I'm used to it and hardly ever fall. But those exposed tines are exactly the kind of thing I would fall on because of Murphy's Law. I'd walk past the thing and the tines would just draw me in like a magnet.

If it's a Yanmar tiller, Mitsubishi, or possibly some other Japanese brand, there is a special top link assembly that is essential to keep it from contacting the tires as you raise it. Don't buy one without that, or with the driveshaft incomplete!

https://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachments/1633570779310-png.715948/ First time I seen this Model. It could very well be what this PTO. shaft was for. Would not fit my YM2000 RS1400 and had to shorten it until the correct one was sent. Needs a bearing replaced. Other than that it still worked and have it Im sure.

I'm running a 6' CountyLine tiller from my YM2310D, but I have sandy loam soil so it's not tough tilling. Run in lowest low gear. Like the 6' because it covers up the tire tracks!

Oh, wish those tillers made it to the eastern side of the mid-west. I hardly ever see them listed outside the left coast. bummer.

Fredircks gets a rare few each year and restores them to 'like-new' condition. They go for about $950 then. Well worth it should you have a matching Yanmar. ;)

What he'd like to get for it. Go high on the price. Easy to come down but kind of hard to go up. @ 2wks. should tell you something.
