how much does underhood pad do?

last week i lost an oring on a fuel filter on my 7.3psd.

I've washed the engine compartment 2x and will do so again.. need to wash the vent areas arounf the wipers again too, in a quest to get rid of the diesel fumes.

just noticed the underhood pad is a gonner. it's soaked. I'll never de-fume the compartment with that on there so am gonna pull those plastic tabs out and rip it out tomorrow.

using the vent or ac just wafts those fumes up and into the cab. cab itself didn't get any fuel in it. windows were up.. and none got tracked in on my boots.

now.. is the paint gonna peel off the hood with tha tpad gone.. or will it immediatly go to freight train sound?

pad is near 200$ from ford... special order item too.

All my SuperDuties with the 7.3 had the pad. The rest haven't had one. You may hear a difference but probably not much. You may like the sound better without it. I don't think heat will damage your hood paint. My '04 with the 6.0 didn't have a pad and I think it probably gave off a lot more heat than the 7.3.

you ar eprobably correct onthe 6.0 and more heat.. it makes more hp.. seems it would have to make more heat.

well.. noise or not.. it's coming off tomorrow after work.. if it's too loud to bear I guess I'll eat the 200$.. in the mean time I'll be sudsing and soaping the engine compartment and the vent around the winwipers down trying to keep the stink outta the cab..

Try a different source. Ebay, JC Whitney, online auto sourcing of all kinds. Let me ask you this. If you could find one for $110. would you put it in?

Soundguy, that's the way my mind works on this kind of stuff. Sometimes on a non-critical, but darn nice thing to have, sourcing it somewhere, if it can be, at a lower price, even if the quality is off a tick, fills the bill nicely.

i did an ebay search earlier but didn't turn up anything specific. I would be interested in see other options though.
my opinion is that it came with a pad and would probably benefit from one, if possible

Seems like this would be a good junk yard item. Even if it wasnt from a 7.3 or even a truck at all. Unless you are trying to keep this truck to put into a museum someday, you could find something that would work even if it has to be cut or modified. No way I would pay $200 or even $50. I would do without. I think a junkyard would be shocked if you tried to buy it from them, I bet they would give it to you. Sorry to hear about the fuel filter, that must have been exciting!

i lost a few gallons of diesel .. was driving down the road.. smelled diesel suddenly.. thought that was odd.. looked back and saw a vaporized cloud.. uh-oh! pulled into work shop I just happend to be passing on my day off. I was bleeding diesel like a garden hose!

stuff went everywhere.

thankfully we have a concrete shop floor and a containment syste,m for spilled oil and diesel with booms.. and then we can just add purple power and mop / scrub up..

yeah.. that price tag shocked me...

jc whitney has a hushpad heat deflector that is an aluminized padded set of 6 stick on sheets you apparently remove your oem pas and stick thes eunder the hood.. but they are over 100$ by the time shipping is added on.. and it loks like you put tinfoil all under the hood.. looks.. um.. bad from the pictures..

How about using some Dynamat, never used their product under the hood but I have used it in the cab/interior. Works well for me.

How about using some duct insulation from some heating and air place. Use your old pad as a template and cut to fit. It has to be a lot cheaper that $200.

I wouldn't worry about the heat, its more to muffle the sound than anything else. I'd also look at another product, like someone else said, Dynamatt.

i pulled the pad off at lunch ... It's probbaly a gonner.. but I have it laid out on the concrete at the shop and liberally .. and I do mean liberally treated it with purple stuff, dish soap and laundry soap and am letting it set there and think..

the innards of the engine compartment and the under side of the hood got scrubbed again at a car wash that had a hot water and medium pressure wand plus a pre soak foam, and a tire and engine cleaner foam.

used that.

then came home and used some more dish soap and laundry soap to clean the plastic around the grill on the vents...

starting truck she seems a hair louder.. might be able to live with it..

i checked my 6.0psd 04.. it has no pad.. so i'm thinking the heat will be a non issue to the paint.. just the sound..

hood has a deep molding to it and fits down over some pointy parts.. so whatver i put on needs to fully form fit to the underside of the hood. i may be able to cut a smaller piece of some sound proofing felt padding and put it on the section of the hood right over the engine before it makes the bends int he hood to make attaching easier.

dunno.. gonna think on it a few days and see what materials I can find.

I don't want to invest more than 50$ as if i'm going that far for a compromise pad.. i might as well save up the lunch money and get the real thing...

It's funny reading about the measures you are going to to clean diesel off your truck. Makes me think of a couple years ago when an older neighbor would intentionally spray the underside (and I believe engine compartment) with diesel as rust preventative. He was trying to tell me that I should do the same. No thanks. :laughing:

Glass Fiberboard may be the material to use. Try a HVAC supply place.

My job at one time was to design that hood blanket. It is there to absorb high frequency engine hash heard in the cab, plus to minimize noise on a government mandated pass by noise test. I'd say drive it awhile and if it is too much louder, pick one up at a junk yard.

it's parked inthe driveway again.. I plan on using it till :

a, the noise bothers me.. which.. I doubt it will.

or

b, I find a cheap pad.

there is a junkyard on my way home i may stop in and ask to see if they have a pad for S&G's

A neighbor of mine uses that stuff (looks like foil bubble-wrap). Seems to work fine, and isn't that expensive.

well.. ran truck for first time since mega cleaning and pad-ectomy.

other than the overwhelming coconut smell from the new freshner I put in.. cab smells good. I can also roll down window and not be fumed. have not tested ac or vent as it was too cold to do so on way to work.

double checked fuel filter housing for leaks again.. bone dry.

so far so good.. but need a ac vent test and vent-vent test still.

noise is just a hair over normal.. and I imagine.. within tolerance.. pad wasn't doing much I guess..

will post back more.. only driven it 12m since super scrub
