I don't really consider a "smart home" very smart to begin with.

It's one thing IMO to type things into your computer looking for information, it's another IMO to allow speakers into your home so you can talk a device to do things for you. Guess what, you may be suprised at who is listening to you in your own home.

Then we have this couple who live near me who are apparently making national news with security breaches with electronic devices in their own home...

Couple call police after mistaking robotic vacuum cleaner for burglar | The Independent

The guy in the news article states that his military training kicked in and yet he and his wife hid in the closest while their 2 year old was in another room??? Added the fact who in their right mind would EVER want this story to get out to show what a complete bafoon you are??? I mean I'd be begging and bribing the cops to write it up as something else.

Please also note what I consider the worlds fastest police response time to a 911 call...

I just kind of scratch my head to where were going to as a society. Kind of just like being able to read a basic road map if you don't have your phone to travel.

Industrial toys, I agree, a boot agasint the door is still easier, added have a gun.

He should have just shot that vacuum cleaner full of daylight! What kicked in? The PTSD?

All this stuff has to be the CIAs (and similar organizations) dream come true.

I was watching a documentary about the very rich and having to hire security staff to watch their security staff. Kind of like all this stuff. It constitutes a security threat that warrants hiring "experts" to oversee it.

I'm a dummy, first to admit it.

I can be on tractor by net and previously looking at something online, and guess what kind of ads now appear when I'm online? Funny enough, some things I could of just been looking at on my computer.

Guess what happens if now speakers are in your home that you can talk to do either look things up for you or control things in your own home...

I really have to bite my tongue when people ask what kind of thermostat can tie into their smart home.

The privacy aspect of it doesn't really concern me. I just don't want my life full of more stuff than necessary, that I don't know how it works and have no control over it. Also, the time to get all this stuff working and keep it working can't be justified for any benefit. I can have a simple switch on the wall that turns on the light when you flip it up or off when you flip it down. It cost 59 cents and will work reliably for fifty years. That's hard to beat!

It starts to get really annoying when there are endless high tech things in your house that don't work properly.

To me it's a simple question; just because it's newer, does that make it better? My first line of security is my deadbolt, my second line is a very noisy dog.

A friend just bought a new TV and Kitchen Range claiming a "Surge" took out the old ones. Is this new digitally controlled consumer BS really worth any extra conveniance or feature if that's what it's going to cost on an ongoing basis?

For the most part no...

Six years ago a 400k neighborhood remodel went all high end for appliances. I got the old washer dryer, tosiba TV and refrigerator... guess which ones are still working... hint it isn't the new stuff
