How heavy should a tractor be?

My opinion is that you soil is the problem, not your tractor. I live just west of the Indiana state line and have very heavy yellow clay. When we first broke ground on our garden plot it was awful. The clay was so gummy, after tilling with our 37hp Kubota we would end up with fist sized balls of hard clay. It was all the tractor could handle with the 6ft. tiller. After amending the soil with grass clippings for 10 years it tills up like a dream with little effort from the same equipment.

Reviving this old thread. OP are you still produce farming and did you ever get a larger tractor ? Its been a few years now and im thankful to have what most consider to big for small acreage. This ls 573 is just right. For our soil we have been getting some pretty heavy duty implements and it handles them well. We use a water wheel transplanter and the tractor has just enough weight to not lift tires. Being able to use the transplanter We have sped up planting times by days. Also use the tractor for planting sweet corn and beans. Have since aold my 630com and have a tc45da we use for a lot of smaller things / moving compost etc.
