Hello fellow TBNers. I don't get to post much since we only have internet on my wife's phone, so hopefully the company I work for will forgive me for posting during work hours.

I was at Lowes Saturday and as I was about to leave I saw a pallet of concrete being readied to load. Did not think much about it until I saw the trailer drive up...well I have got to stay and see this:D

They two employees dropped the ramp and tried to take it off, not gonna work, thought about raising the forks over the side rails and sliding the pallet into the trailer, thankfully thought better not.

Next idea they had (mind you I could not hear what they were saying but could interpret their hand gestures) stack 3 pallets on top of each other, just above the rails, sat the loaded pallet on them.

They go back inside and come out with 3 pallets, put them in the trailer with the majority of the load in front of the axle.

This is a single axle landscape trailer, and lucky IF it is a 3500# load rating. I was able to get a couple of pictures before a truck pulled up to block my view but was able to get a pic thru the windshield.

I head and saw one pallet crush from the weight and the load was tilted slightly forward, however they did strap it down. As I drove off I was just wondering how far down the road he would make it...hopefully he made it home.

I counted 6 layers with approximately 8 bags per layer, that 3840lbs!

Sorry for the quality of the pictures, I have a company issued Blackberry...an no I don't work for the US Government:D:D

Hopefully he wasn't going far. Looks like a lot of weight on the tongue in Pic #3

Either the pallet was too wide for the wheel wells or he didn't want to scuff the box.

Around here most places sell cement Qty. 42 - 80 lb bags per pallet (3,360 lb) or Qty. 56 - 60 lb bags per pallet (also 3,360 lb).
Either way it is too much load for that trailer. Hopefully he didn't have to go to far.
He'd have been better off just having them load the pallet in the back of the truck.

Good to hear from you Hunterridgefarm. Hadn't saw much out of you for awhile. Hoped all was well.

Nice pics. I always say, "If you think God doesn't have a sense of humor, just watch humans". :)

The truck and trailer probably got a lot farther than most are expecting

My 97' Dodge dually had a standard spring pack, no helpers. I hauled several pallets of readi-mix from Lowe's and they would make the truck squat quite a bit. That truck with an aluminum bed weighed 7400 lbs and I if recall was rated for like 11 or 11.5. I think the op should have cut the plastic wrap and tossed a few bags onto the back of the truck at the least.

does Lowes rent trailers like that to customers?

If the 3360# weight is true, I bet hes not too overloaded. 3500# trailer prolly only weighs 500#.

So a good 3k capacity + whatever the tongue carries (in this case, a bit more than it probably should).

I would venture a guess that the truck and hitch would have been fine, as would be the trailer axle, but the load placement puts a lot on the tongue.

Hope he didn't take the interstate.

My concern was that they stacked it on 3 pallets and one was already crushed and the load was tilted forward. I thought if he hit a bump or had to stop sudden the load would tip forward.

Thanks Richard.

I read TBN daily but don't have access to internet at home except on my wife's phone at this time. We are checking into other options and hopefully will have access soon, since we are having a website designed.

Been busy cleaning up the fields and getting the shop set up for the woodworking side business. Hopefully pulling electrical in the next month or two. Weekends are booked and with the darkness coming early I don't have time to pull wire during the week.

We have decided to take 2016 off from farming to concentrate on the woodworking and get it established, already have several orders for dinning room tables and barn wood furniture. I am thinking about planting buckwheat in the fields for summer, give the bees something to look forward too.:D

I sure hope he made it safely to where he's going. But if not If I had to guess I would say 5 miles. :)

I will be purchasing a pallet of concrete in the future but luckily I have trailer and truck rated to haul the load. Don't think I would try it with that little trailer.

I'd be better off putting the pallet in the back of the truck.

Thanks Richard.

I agree. It was about 25% overloaded but if you've ever seen how trucks and trailers are overloaded in the Third World you'd think that was very conservative. 100% overload is pretty common and I suspect the trailer and axle manufacturers build in at least that much "safety factor".

My favorite third world trailer story was following a truck pulling a hot tar trailer. After three or four miles we finally got a chance to pass and when we did saw that the trailer was connected to the pintle hitch with a wire coat hanger. Eek!

Third world countries are not overloaded with dime store lawyers. I would think that Lowe's would use a bit more discretion same as many equipment rental places do these days about overloading. Had this person gotten into an accident you can bet that Lowe's could very well be dragged into the court room.

I am surprised One of the people did not throw some on the back of the truck. No way are they going to unload it other than by hand.

I was going to write that. Two layers of bags in the pickup and its even legal. If not too far (& cautious driver) no problem.
