I was out hoeing the 2nd and 3rd planting of cucumbers, {the 2nd being transplants, and a little older than the others} when I found lots of cantaloupes on the transplant vines. So I was hoeing my 2nd planting of cucumbers and cantaloupes So much for my fine labeling skills.

We got two five gallon buckets of peas off the 2nd planting yesterday. We shelled half of them, and gave the other half away. I cooked a small pot for supper, and we are waiting for the rest to cool from their blanching so they can go in bags and into the freezer.

I clipped my last melon a while ago. The Tender Sweets are just a few days away from being ripe though. And now I can cut up most of the north side of the garden. All that is left that is still doing something is the peppers, pole beans, 2nd planting of cucumbers and cantaloupes, and the 2nd planting of zukes and squash. Everything else is done.

I cut the first Tender Sweet melon this morning. It was yellow meated, not orange. But still very tasty. They are starting to get sunburned too, so I'll be eating a lot of them the next few days.

My peas got too wet, and not sure if they are going to recover or not. The vines look alright, but so far no new blooms. Armenian cucumbers are kicking it. Getting 5 or 6 a day, with the vines full of small ones. {I've got two set aside for seed that I'm letting get big}

Well not too bad for July 25 or around 65 days or so after getting started and putting the transplants and seeds out. I think it was the beginning of the last full week in May this year...but hey who's keeping track right


Anyhow after surviving a mass wave attack of zucchini for about the past two weeks I finally have decent cauliflower, green beans, cherry tomatoes, green bell peppers, eggplant, plus hot wax and jalapeno for pickling and yes there is still more summer squash :confused2:


No cukes or big red tomatoes yet but I do have plenty of leaf lettuce to pick and some nice really nice heads of iceberg are almost ready too.

That looks good. The squash in my garden were less than stellar this year. But the ones in the garden I grew at Mamma's are really making. I planted some of the same seeds in my garden, and they are just coming up. Maybe they will do for me this time. Before when I planted them, we got 3 1/2 inches of rain in 30 minutes right after I planted, and only two or three of them came up.

A couple of weeks ago I had ate a Hungarian Yellow Wax pepper in the garden to test the hotness. I was able to eat the whole thing, taking care not to get any of the seeds. Today I decided to eat another one. After four or five bites, I got a few seeds. They were hot.

Our Pruden's Purple are fading, so I planted a bunch of saved seeds a week or so back. Today was the first time I thought to check on them. I have a pan full of sprouts. I will pot them up the next good transplanting day.

Wow, has it ever been hot in central Alabama. And even the best of gardens takes a beating in this kind of heat and humidity. But as plants die and fade away I just plant more seed or throw in another tomato plant. That and lots of water keeps things going sometimes.

Four grandsons are visiting in the next week. I hope this corn gets ripe just in time. Fresh corn microwaved in the shuck is hard to beat.

To some folks, these tomato plants would be subpar. For me they are fighting this heat and still produces good tomatoes. Other plants have bit the dust but these keep holding on.

Been away on business/vacation for two weeks. Garden exploded while we were gone. Today we picked Tomatoes, squash, beans, carrots, onions, peas, beets, lettuce, basil, zucchini, red pepper, blueberries, raspberries, and a ton of wild blackberries!!! Wife put out this little display for tonight's dinner!

We enjoyed a refreshing cucumber and avocado salad with our evening supper on the back deck. crisp and delightful.

We regularly slice cucumbers and dress them with avocado slices and a little Johnny's seasoning salt. Great appetizer IMHO.

Glad to see everyone's garden is doing well. My 2nd planting of sweet corn and Tendersweet melons are ready. The corn didn't do as well as I would have liked. The ears are small, but good. We are getting lots of Armenian cucumbers. My winter squash has little quash on them. And my last planting of pumpkins are starting to vine. The 2nd planting of peas didn't really recover from getting too wet. I'm holding off on planting more so I can have a break from pea picking.

Okay just finished up pickling the first picking of some my hot peppers Hungarian Wax and some "Penos" (jalapeno) and loaded up a few jar fulls of onion, tomato, and zukes so I'm good for a while...

or maybe just for this week.






Wohoooo also have two baby watermelons forming might actually get something yet.

Picked over 450 ears of sweet corn the last 2 days. Well dad did I have been too busy. 14 dozen frozen on cob rest made 24 quart bags of cut off. At least a years supply.

Creaming corn is a job of work. But unless you have unlimited freezer space, you just about have to do it.

WOW, that is a lot of corn. But will be good eating this winter.

Tonight we cut the Tendersweet melon I had clipped the other day. It was a pretty standard yellow meat, not the orange meat advertised. Not as sweet as my Crimson Sweets, but still a good melon.

Last night we did 5 half pints of pickled okra. Will have to wait three or four more days to sample them.

Today's harvest included snap and snow peas, lots of carrots, and a gallon of blackberries. Sweet talking the better half to make some blackberry syrup tonight. Quite warm in the PNW to be over the stove this rare hot evening though.

One pint jar was put up the end of June. The quart and other pint were put up last week. Only have two jalapeño plants.

Brandy Wine and Old German heirlooms ripening on the vine...and picked about quart of cherry tomatoes from only one plant just now!

Put up 4 more quarts of them darn zukes and tomatoes too :confused2:

Harvested more string beans again last night and probably will again tonite along with my first cukes of the season

Things are rolling in Vermont now considering the moderate drought conditions here and in the surrounding areas.

I have been watering most every day.

Wow 3rd of August first crop of string beans are almost gone by but they produced heavy and I picked at least 6 times on that little patch....and there is still some yet. My flat roma beans are in flower now and my heirloom "creasy pole beans for Library's seed saving program are topping their poles and also showing flowers. Finally got some needed rain over the weekend and today I have a big pile of cukes. Eggplant, bell peppers all producing great and ready to harvest hot cherry peppers for pickling, some are turning red now, and there 's more jalapenos and hot wax too. Rain wrecked several heads of the iceburg lettuce I had growing (got all mush). Squash has slowed down finally especially the zuc's but I found a new way to eat more...

And a friend of mine made me a nice batch of pesto with some basil I harvested and shared with her.
