Man vs Raccoon, Part III

I am continuing to build my fortress against the neighborhood squirrels and raccoons. The inner part of the garden is completely enclosed in the 32 inch tin, and now I have two strands of electric fence on top.

For safety reasons I am not running the hot wire around the pier garden, but I am hoping the tin will keep the critters from climbing in. A couple of spots have some tall posts near some large plants. I plan to either trim the plants and/or have some hot wire to the top of the posts. My plan is that my wife and I enjoy the sweet corn this year, and that the squirrels get fewer of the tomatoes.

It's looking pretty formidable. How do you feel about coon skin caps? A live trap and a .22 will thin them out pretty quick. When we were having trouble with otters down at our fish ponds, we would catch one coon a night. You can sell the meat and the skin if you know the right folks.

I've picked squash twice now. Still only about 6-8 getting ready every couple three days.

Silks on the sweet corn, but no picture.

We planted for a late harvest of leeks last fall. Took longer than we expected but they wintered over and are doing great. Pulling them throughout this beautiful spring. Thinking we might have to repeat this venture this coming autumn. image-2059935354.jpg

It's not late, naw, naw. It's just early.

Little peas and Acorn squash showing this morning.

I trimmed some of the undergrowth in the trench to get to the {soon to be ripe} tomatoes. It has gotten out of control.

I got just about everything side dressed,

Where I come from we call it getting the crop "laid by".
I planted a small garden for my Mother and planted an extra bunch of tomatoes. Earlier in the week I ran the tiller where I could and "hilled" up dirt around plants, creating a good trench alongside the plants to hold water. Today I talked to my Mom by phone. She told me what else she (at 91) had done in the garden and said "I think we can call it laid by"
