1.7lb Persimmon and a 1.3lb Cherokee Purple along with assorted varieties. The orange and yellow tomatoes weighed 10lbs. All organic.

Purple hulls on the vine, then in the bucket. I'm getting two buckets every three days. I could pick every other day, but that would be more work, and I can be lazy :ashamed:

The heat is playing havoc with the green beans. Each picking I get a little less than the one before. If any of you hot weather guys have green bean knowledge, when would be a good time to plant a late crop?

Tim, I never planted them late, but I would think somewhere in 1st couple weeks of August?

Our green beans are getting close to flowering.

I had some DEF that was too old to use in the truck. According to Cummins it can be cut 10:1 with water and used for fertilizer. I mixed some up, probably more like 20:1, and watered some garden things with it. Seems to work fine, I don't see any burning.

Thanks Dennis. That is about what I was thinking. The heat breaks about the 3rd week of September around here, so they should be blooming about then. This was my first year growing green beans, and I have really enjoyed eating them. I will pick the first melons and banana cantaloupes this week. There have only been a couple to get sunburned so far. But we have been getting a lot of rain and not too much sun. If that changes, there will likely be more.

I've been taking up soaker hoses from where they are no longer needed and moving them to my young pepper, cucumbers and peas. I pulled up the stunted corn this morning, moved the melons back and took up that hose. I ate what corn there was left on the stalks right in the garden. The ear in the picture was about as big as there was left. And there were plenty that were smaller. We made cream corn to go in the freezer {and a small amount for supper} from 3 1/2 dozen ears off of the other corn. I have come to the conclusion that grocery stores don't charge enough for their veggies. The food on that plate should be at least $25

I think you are right there, EXCEPT, that you cannot buy that plate full for any amount of money. Freshly grown trumps. I did see some pretty good ears of corn at Winn Dixie grocery store yesterday 4 for $1. The ears looked great, but too big to be the kind of sweet corn I like to grow. Did not get any, but I might try some in a week or so if it continues to look good. Normally corn on cob at grocery store is parched.

Our daughter and her son (2 1/2) were here from Colorado. We had lots of tomatoes, BLTs, etc, but for one meal we had only what we had grown in garden. Green Beans, Fried Squash, Tomatoes, Fried Okra, Corn on the Cob. Wow, was it good, and little fella ate three helpings of green beans, and I loved seeing him get after the corn on cob

Larro, I've never been a fan of creamed corn, but yours looks like it would make me reconsider.

The creamed corn I am familiar with is corn in some runny, funky white sauce.

Our 7 year old great niece is here from Denver now. When I would fix her some lunch, she would say, "I don't want any veggies, except your green beans." I think she ate some almost every meal for the three weeks she was here. How did your people do with the heat. Our GN would ask us just about everyday, "is it always this hot here?" If she was outside, she wanted to be in the dog, chicken or peacock pens, or in the river. The rest of the time she was near the AC vent.

The recipe we used to prepare it for freezing called for 1/2 cup of water, 1 Tbs bacon fat, 2 Tbs butter and salt and pepper to taste for every 8 ears of corn. We cooked it for 10 minutes, then let it cool and bagged it for freezing. It did come out pretty thick. When we thaw it out to use, it might have to have a little water added. But it takes up less space in the freezer, and uses less freezer bags this way. I like it better on the cob too, but we just don't have the room in the freezer for the cobs.

Right, I don't garden to be cost effective. I garden for enjoyment, exercise and knowing what I eat is natural. It is amazing what you can buy an ear of corn for in season.

Happy 4th everyone. I clipped the first Crimson Sweet this morning. We cut it after supper. It could have used a couple more days, but it was the 4th. It was still better than the melons I have bought the last couple of weeks. Very sweet.

Nice melon Tim, I havent even checked mine for a week! Been out of town working and the crabgrass has about won the war. Will forage in there this evening and see if there are any "survivors". We did get a decent cantaloupe last Friday though:thumbsup:

We ate our first banana cantaloupe two or three days ago. It wasn't very big, nor was it ripe all the way to the rind. But it was a cantaloupe. It was getting a soft spot, so I went ahead and picked it a day or two early. The ones coming down the pike are all bigger, and yesterday I saw one starting to turn yellow. Hopefully I can wait on them to get all the way ripe.

Gotta love these mild July temps we had during the 4th weekend. I think the produce put on extra color to celebrate. The abundance is beginning:

About to deliver some to my neighbors. They will get most of the peppers from the picture above, as well.

That looks great. I am making a lot of tomatoes, but they are not as pretty as yours. My Jalapeno and Bell Peppers are producing nicely, and the New Mexico Chili Peppers are just starting. We have been making tomato, cucumber, onion and squash salads, with everything coming out of the garden. But I pulled my squash and bush bean plants up this afternoon. I'm going to plant more as soon as I get a spot tilled. The highs in the high 90's last week worked just about everything over pretty good. Even my purple hulls have been producing less this week.
