How does your garden grow?

So put my garden to rest today and all that is left now is the brussel sprouts. Last night cooked some up with bacon and chicken to have with some potato salad I also made with some local potatoes..yum!

Was 24 degrees yesterday morning and snowed last week for the first time too! So a few days prior to that I scavenged off the last few pepper and eggplant that were still growing (weren't much :D ). Most all my herbs are still going and yesterday I moved them all off of the front porch and into the little HF greenhouse for the time being.

Yep, the better half's garden is finished other than some leeks and swiss chard, the rest is harvested. Maybe the highlight this year, is the Kale chips she made. I hate Kale but she seasoned and dehydrated the greens and they are actually fantastic. Light, crunchy, and melt in your mouth! Corn was a hit... lots of kernels in the freezer. Tomatoes not so good this year for some reason. Lack of flavor. Raspberries, blueberries, squash, cucs, and onions all good as well.

Those look good. I'm picking a handful of the Tommy Toe tomatoes every two three days. The skin on them is too thick for my taste, but it does help with the bugs. I'm growing them in {what was} the edge of the pond. But since we got 0 inches and 0 tenths of rain in October, the edge of the pond is a lot further away than it was.

Dry here too. A long time ago I redid some ditches, and water flow thru the yard. Also, started a project to build a two car carport. Since then no rain to test either. Without an irrigation system my garden would be toast.

24 would be cold. We just returned from a visit to northern Va. Our vacation planner friend threw out the idea of visiting Vermont next year about same time. I told him the weather might be a little cold there. Do you usually have cold weather last of October, first of November?

We had our first patchy frost on the ground this morning. It was nice and thick on the car and the roof of the house. 40F. I have got the garden cut up, but still haven't planted the greens. Margie has also ask for broccolini. We grew it last winter and really liked it.

Generally late Oct. early Nov. is not unseasonably cold for most of us though it might be for you. :D.

It's definitely a transition point and never really know what it might do  There has occasionally been an early snowstorm around that time but normally not lasting. If you're not used to driving under those conditions especially on the mountains (hills really, the highest point is only 4395 ft.) it could be slightly unsettling.

If you're looking for a recommendation I would suggest the earlier part of October just before and up into to Columbus Day weekend.

Foliage is usually peak around then!

Any of you composting in a pile and turning it with your tractor? I'm thinking of doing this, cause I have a tractor and I'm virtuously lazy : )

Of course... I go out of may way to use my tractor. Even if I can lift the garage/recycle cans into the bed of my pickup, I use the bucket. Rationale... might tweak my back.
