How do you protect your PTO shaft when it's not being used?

IF you can find the spare. I spend hours looking for my spare parts...and seldom find them. I then buy spares for my spares.

Been there.....done that!

Don't you usually find the spare just after you buy another one? Or at the very least, when you go to put the new spare away I'm sure that you must place it right next to the one which you couldn't find.

But of course. That is just a variation of Murphy's Law.

I spent a few hours plowing and disking, now that nicely greased shaft on my tractor is covered with dirt.
This is the EXACT reason I NEVER put grease on the pto shafts of my tractors...

They just don't need it OR the mess it causes!

This is my thoughts also. Never have a problem connecting a shaft.
Yes in a perfect world lubrication would prolong the life of a shaft but in the real world grease oil and dust make an excellent lapping compound. To each his own. 😁

I ordered one of those plastic PTO shaft covers. Went in and picked it up and paid for it. Their cheap and well worth it. Found one just like it laying on the edge of the parking lot on my way back to the truck. A couple trips later saw another one in the trash bin of the repair shop. Retrieved it. Have seen several since but left them laying. So for those that make a trip to the dealerships once in a while be sure to keep your eyes open or ask about them back in the repair area.

That is a very amusing observation... and I'm sure that it's one of Murphy's Laws.

I saw the value of the shaft cover that came on my 4105 & never 'ditched' it. It's always on if there isn't a PTO run implement attached. However, I'll take your advice and, the next time I'm at my dealership, enquire about a spare cover from 'back of the shop'.

LS tractors come with a plastic cover that snaps onto the bearing housing. I always put it back on when not using the PTO. A little fluid film on the shaft keeps it lubed up and it stays clean.

my kioti came with a screw on plastic cover..never use it.

I greased the shaft and use PTO implements about 60% of the hours on the tractor...no issues in a year/280 hours. Wipe the grass/dirt/snow off with a rag and hook up the implement.
