Septic w/ drain field. When we built the barn/workshop we put in a separate holding tank w/ a grinder pump to feed the house septic tank. It was either that or a complete separate septic system for the building. We didn't have the space for a separate drain field that we couldn't drive equipment over so we went with the tank/pump option.

It goes from a regular septic tank into the 800 gal pump tank. As it pumps from near the bottom it has room for about 600 gal of real good stuff
before it would over flow. As we are on well (near the shop, 250 ft from the house) we do not have power for water. So if you flush a few times it will not come near to filling the pump tank. Had the electrician out yesterday, he is going to put in a plug (220 volt at the breaker panel) for our 1/2 HP pump that is in our 2,000 gal storage tank. We can then plug into a generator and have water. :thumbsup:

It sprays out as pure water just like the municipal sewer systems. Essentially, those of us on aerobic systems are a municipal sewer system of one. I have two pop-up sprinklers that water my grass. As long as the air pump works to keep the little bacteria bugs happy and well fed, there is no odor at all in the spray except for a slight chlorine smell from the tiny bit of "insurance" chlorine added to the water. The nice thing about aerobic is no leach field problems. The bad thing is the state requires an annual service contract, so it costs me about $225 annually or about $75 per inspection and cleaning every 4 months. My aerator motor runs continually and that is an electric expense just like my well pump. The motors last about 6 to 8 years and have to be replaced because of shot bearings, cost: $400. My initial cost for the system was $5500 back in 2001. I also had to pay an engineer to approve the layout and $400 to the county for an inspection of the installation.
In addition, I guess I should say I have a gray water system because our laundry water is just drained out on the ground. So essentially, I have an aerobic system and a gray water system.

Jinman hit it on the head, with Aerobic, it just runs out into a gulley near my house. It's pretty clean coming out. With mine, it only gets checked once a year, and yeah, it eats up some electricity every month. My motor costs about $200 to replace.

I still don't understand why the dog can poo in the yard, politicians can talk poo,throw poo, spread poo, feed us poo, but I cannot poo in the yard myself. In fact, in Iowa it is not legal to have an outhouse and all residences must have indoor facilities.

septic, wouldn't want it any other way, cause the alternative means there are just too many people around.
