Hey RT,

It just occured to me that you found a way to be represented at the picnic without the pleasure of a steak.:laughing:

I mentioned this thread to my wife and she printed out a copy of her list for our 4th of July cookout. There are some things on her list that do not apply to your cookout, but a few new things appeared that may or may not be helpful. Here's a few more items to consider:

- Steak knives (plastic knives won't do it)
- Onions/chopped onions?
- Potato salad
- baked beans
- chips
- sliced tomatoes
- veggie tray for munching
- butter/margarine for the corn (we put out sticks and let people roll their corn right on the sticks to butter it)
- electric extension cords & plug-in strips
- crockpot for heating/warming
- apron(s) for the cook
- hot pads and pot holders/gloves
- cooking thermometer
- lots of paper towels
- check propane level if being used for cooking
- strike anywhere matches and/or lighters
- cookies and desserts
- coolers
- Off brand insect repellent
- Insect spray

Do you see why I always start early getting things ready? This is just a partial list. We also make a list of shopping trips and when/where we will buy for the freshest food. There's always plenty to do to keep you from being bored.;)

You just made me laugh. You'll know why when you read your Email.

Are you sure it was me and not your serious level of exhaustion that makes even the simplest stuff funny?

Thanks Jim. Tell your wife I said thanks too. I've doubled my 'to buy' list. As this is supose to be a potluck, the food section is already covered, but the condiments that go with it I didn't think about. I like the idea of the disposable aluminum pans too.

Steak knives.... hmmm....:ashamed:.... gunna have to think about this one.

Dollar General? If I had thought about it last week I would have donated some..
But shipping at this point would be difficult due to my travel schedule this week....

Get as much preparation done as possible ahead of time. You will find that on the day of the cookout, time will pass ultra-fast and things will take much longer than you expected. I'm always amazed and how things I think I can do quickly seem to take so much time when I'm meeting and greeting guests and trying to be a host and a worker-bee at the same time. So the more you plan and get ready ahead of time, the smoother things will go. Organize your cookout area like a good kitchen so you don't have to move far to get to everything. Also, don't be afraid to ask your guests to help set up something. You don't have to do everything yourself. People are normally very eager to help.

Good luck with the weather and have a great party Cyril.

What jinman said :D

I start by emptying out my garage a week or more ahead of time, that's were I set up the food. I borrow tables ahead of time and have them set up. I keep the food inside because of the neighborhood cows attract flies, and they can smell a picnic faster than an ant. I also have a window air conditioner running in the garage. My kids have car parking duty, they go in the front yard, I have enough room for about 100 people in cars, if more , they go in the back field.
I tell people to bring lawn chairs. I will have 2 or 3 sunshades set up, plus my trees are now big enough to provide shade. I tell people it's an outdoor picnic. It's pretty much the same people, so they know what to bring, and they also bring games and such. I also have a volleyball net set up, so we usually have some nice games going.
I provide the meats, which is usually hamburgers, dogs, brats, chicken strips, and sometimes boneless ribs. I have a cooler outside to keep raw meat in. The year I had over 100 people, I knew it would be a big crowd, so I had a friend bring another grill. I start grilling about an hour before eating time, and put burgers and dogs in foil pans with foil covers. It's hard to get everything done in time, and it's also hard to meet people, socialize, and also do the grilling. I put the grill out back where everyone will sit and eat, so I can socialize as I grill. My parties are alcohol free, but I also usually have at least a 5 gal jug of lemonaide ready, and more mix that can quickly be made.
My corn is always gone before my party, or else I would roast some corn. There is nothing better than corn soaked and then roasted in the husk.
enjoy your picnic. mine is labor day evening, so I'm starting to get ready.
