How do you fuel your tractor (logistics, not finding the cap to the tank)?

While my tractor is easier to fuel since its on the fender; I'll still add in what I use. I just got the tractor and needed some diesel cans and hate all the CARB compliant ones. I did some searching and came across racing fuel cans. Since they are not "designed for transportation" they don't require the auto vent and have a real open vent. The ones I bought came in tons of colors (got yellow) and with a long filler hose that I can get in place before fuel flows. The caps on them are also very heavy duty. They were a little pricey, but well worth it. I dump all 5 gallons in a minute or two.

I have been using a plastic herbicide drum for years. Started with an oil barrel pump (up and down), then a cheap rotary pump. A couple weeks ago I found a 12 volt 8 gpm pump at TSC made for diesel, kerosene or mineral spirits. They had it on sale for $50.00. It works great.

I think this is what dmbtree82 mentioned. I use a couple for small engine gas and also when we go camping. They work great.

Pretty close to the above picture with a nice long hose as well.

Here is an interesting thought that occurred to me. I have a gas station about 1.5 miles from me. I live in the country so everyone is used to seeing tractors on the rode. I wonder if anyone has thought about making a tank that would fit in a FEL but could easily be rolled out it. That way I could just drive the station, fill the tank and take it home. I wouldn't have to mess with a truck or anything else to get more diesel.

Or is it a totally stupid idea?

Great idea, if you are close to a station.

Interesting idea, but you would be transporting hazmat in an unconventional way over public roads, so I don't think there's a simple answer to this. DOT and a number of states have requirements for the way a fuel transfer tank is constructed, so you'd have to research that for your area before you take out the torch or plasma cutter. Driving with a DIY tank in a raised loader bucket may raise additional issues for the local constabulary. I know I'd do a double-take if one pulled up behind me at an intersection. :)

I took a 50 gallon rectangular fuel tank from a bob truck, mounted a 12 volt fill-rite pump to it I bought at a farm sale for 20 bucks. I left the tank mounted to the frame holder that came off the truck, that allows me to use my forks to load and unload the tank from a truck bed or trailer ect. I keep it setting on a furniture dolly in the shop and just roll it over to the tractor when needed.

Wow I wish they would have that sale again. Those pumps are really expensive regularly!
