The skin (what I call husk) will crack open and reveal the walnut on my variety a short time before they fall to the ground. Trying to remove the husk before it is ready is fruitless, not going to happen. Once the nut is removed from the husk it is quite damp and needs to dry before it molds and rots. The husk while moist is what stains your hands.
Ruffdog talked about working his nuts with his arm and hands in a pail of water to get the goo off. Does everyone have goo on their nuts? I forgot to ask about that. If so, how do you get the goo off of your nuts? I usually pick my nuts from the tree when they are gooless or at least have less goo. If the goo is there I just let it dry on my nuts. I posted a picture from last year of my nuts but some of you probably should not.
I've been eyeing the walnut tree in my mother's field wondering if it's worth messing with them. This thread has given me some ideas to try so I will probably pick a bucket when they're ready.
Long before my nuts started getting goo on them though, I would be seeing my doctor.
Norwex towel is where it's @.
Does the goo from your nuts wash out?
It takes lots of good soap with pumice and rubbing to get it off.
