I have the Legacy XL as well, same setup. Set the toplink on your weight box to the lower position and it will hang straight. The dealer set up mine with the wrong connection as well. Here's a pic of it straight up, also in a huge pit of mud. Having 4wd just means you're further away from home when you get stuck....
