Corn stalks are really hard on a round bailer with belts like all of them are today. The best bailer for corn stalks was the old (as in ancient), New Holland 'chain' bailers. No belts to destroy, just an endless chain with metal rollers. They sucked for hay but for cornstalks they were great. Only issue was, they were all manual tie twine and you had to turn the crank on the bailer to move the twine arms.
Have you seen the 9x9 baler that they're working on?

Could it be climate is shifting...

Friends in WA state started out as a newly minted UC Davis AG grad in viticulture years ago and was told WA just not ideal for grapes...

Decades later each just keeps getting better and now hailed as a pioneer with foresight...

Recovering a burnt Class combine out of the field:

Just had a new JD go up across the field from me yesterday Here, first thing an operator does (if they have time) is drop the grain table and back up from it. It burned to the ground. They all look grisly after they roast. Buddy of mine lost his Claas round bailer last year bailing wheat straw and roasted it and about 20 acres of field too. Always worry about my round bailer catching fire. I regularly shoot the bearings with an IR heat gun.

A young farmer near me uses this to get a new baler. He's burned 3 so far.

Considering the 'learning curve' associated with a new unit, not something I want to do. Might not be a bad idea with a unit that has issues though.

He rarely has a baler that's 3 years old. He got a new one last year (fire). He got a new one this year (fire). He's not big enough to wear one out in a year or 5 years.

Must be tight with his insurance agent. Around here, after one, possibly 2, you'd get cancelled.
