Has anyone taken a horse drawn potato plow and made it work on a tractor? I have an old plow in the barn but no horses.

I've no experience with converting a horse drawn implement to use with a tractor, but this was a very common practice. I have two row corn planter in the barn that was converted. You might want to post some photos of what you are planning to do and see if that generates some more feedback.

Good luck!

When I was Ten years old I drove the tractor, my uncle walked behind the potatoe plow. Wore him out in short order. We never tried that again although it worked very well. The plow had very large wings/shares compared to the 3pt plow I have for my tractor. If you can make the conversion please post pictures as that would be a great productive project in my opinion.

Hi roush

You don't want to over strain the old plow.
Is your current tractor a 2, 4 or 6 HP tractor ? :)

teasing :)

I'm gonna wait till they deliver my 2520 before I start this. I need to take another look at the plow. I'd like to take it apart and weld it into a 3 point hookup if possible.

Until we got modern and bought a single bottom trailer plow and after that a 2 bottom 3 pt, we always plowed with the horse plow or potato plow behind the tractor. Still use the horse plow for shallow ditches for pipes, wire, etc and am considering mounting it up for 3 pt hitch as I'm getting to old for all that horsing around. As jobguy stated; it'll wear you out in a hurry. Even more so if you're pulling it with a horse as he want's to go at his speed, not yours. Ask anyone who ever worked behind one. Them old timers must have been a tough bunch.

I saw one at a community auction this spring someone had converted. Looked like they did a nice job, but who know's how it actually worked. Tried to talk my buddy into buying it. He opted for another one there, still the pull type.

Says he's going to pull it with his golf car. Should be interesting... I'll try and be there the day he does it, and get pics. It is amazing what that thing will pull.

Yes you can. I have one that I put a 3 pt hitch on and it works fine. I gave $15 for the plow and I think it cost me about $35 to put the 3 pt on it. I pull it behind a 43 hp tractor. Its a lot stronger plow that you think. I have pulled mind as deep as it will go, all you could see was the 3 pt. I always roll my garden up in the fall with it and makes the soil so much better to work with in the spring.

If you can post a photo I'd sure like to see it.

I made this out of a potato plow. Works good. The grate shakes and let's the dirt threw it also.

Mike,
Thanks for that photo. If gives me an idea that I can build a sleeve type frame from some 6 x 6 box beam guide rail I have and could use for both the turning and potato plow, just by sliding them inside and bolting in place.
I'll do a little studying on it and post photo's if I build it.
