You are right Dave...I never have understood how anyone could actually eat Spagetti O's or Chef Boyardee anything...just to name two items that taste just awful to me but kids seem to love them...???:)

Bob, theres things in this universe we,ll never have answers to,and a kids taste is but one:laughing:Dave

Haven't made any in several years. We have a White Mountain hand crank machine bought almost 40 years ago for about $20. Last time I saw them in a store--maybe 10 years ago-- the price was over $100.

When I was a kid we'd argue over who got to crank the ice cream. The one who did the most work got to lick the paddles.

Many of the recipes back then included raw eggs. Not PC now.

May not be PC for some, but yep, my recipes, from Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream & Dessert cookbook, all include raw eggs and everyone who has tried it liked it and it hasn't made anyone sick yet.

I recently bought 2 cans to have something quick and easy. I did eat'em, but I sure won't buy anymore.

Bird, we make homemade Mayonnaise and use raw eggs all the time...and good homemade custard Ice Cream needs raw eggs..just use fresh ones and all is fine and if not you leave this world happy...

Bob, I can't even remember the last time I had real mayonnaise. I've been a lifelong user of Miracle Whip. But way back yonder when I was a little 150 pound feller wanting to get to 175, I drank lots of chocolate milk shakes and used to frequently put a raw egg in them. And now I'd like to get back to 175, or even 190, from the other side.

Do you know the name of your ice cream maker?Sounds like it might be easier than the one we use.It would be nice to give it a try, thanksDave

I'll get the name of it tonight and post tomorrow. This thing is easy to use. We even have homemade ice cream in the winter.

we make about half gal a month, more if we are going to have a party with friends.

still looking for a good source of fresh unpasteurized cream but until then we continue to use heavy wiping cream and half n half

A must have for proper ice cream, banana pudding & creme brulee! Been about 2 weeks since my last taste of the homemade - too long.

Probably been sixty years since I've had some. I remember I got to lick the paddle!

one thing is to make sure to pull the handles as your older brother might give the crank a good twist while your tong is in there :p

we used to make it any time there was a good fresh snow on the ground. used old hand crank method too. then in early 80s we got a electric version at a garage sale. that sure made making it easier too! eating it was just as satisfying :) ;)

Grew up making it and made some just a couple years ago.

A silly story regarding it....

My (then girlfriend) wifes mother passed away. Maybe a year or so after she passed, they had a party at her parents house. This is 15 years ago.

We were going to make the ice cream. She pulled out her mothers instructions and we went at it...

Add some of this....
Add some of that.....
Add more of the other.....

Turn the churn on and let freeze.

Well....about FOUR hours later, it still had not froze like it was supposed to. The party was on the tail end so, we dipped it out as it was.

Everyone of course, LOVED it....just raving about how tastey it was. She & I felt it was a bit rich....but ate it anyway.

The left over was put into the freezer. The next day, her father sat down to have some but wanted to cut down on the sweetness of it soooooooooo, he poured in a little milk. It immediately thickened up and turned "solid".

hmmm......what gives?

It turns out that her MOTHER knew to add the ingredients and "fill with milk to here" however, her MOTHER neglected to write that minor part down in her recipe.... I happen to be a retentive when it comes to following a recipe. I can make anything as long as I have the instructions and I will follow them to the letter. Even if it doesn't say anything about adding milk :(

We added some milk to the remains and don't you know it was pretty dangggggggggggg good!!!

There is a moral to the story in there somewhere, probably has something to do with never listening to your mother in law's recipe book?

:confused2:

I think the ice cream maker we have is a Cuisinart. You freeze the bowl and pour in the ingredients, put in the dasher and plug it in. It only makes a quart or so, but it's easy and perfect for just 2-4 people. We have made more than one batch ahead when we were having a party. It comes out fairly soft anyway and needs to be "cured" a while to get good and solid.

I picked about a half gallon of cherries of my Northstar tree yesterday....maybe I can get DW to let me sue some of them for some ice cream!

Chuck, that sounds as if it works about like our KitchenAid ice cream maker for the mixer. The KitchenAid makes about 2 qt. at a time.

I actually made a smoother, almost store-bought, one time by adding too much cream. I have a 6-quart freezer and tried to proportionately add from a 4-quart recipe. It was good, but left a greasy aftertaste on your tongue.

Did anyone ever test their manliness by seeing who could hold their hand in the melted water after the ice cream was pulled out? Talking about cold, it could turn your hand red after just a few seconds.

you may not believe me being from Alabama, but that cold is warm compared to winter up here in northern Minnesota:laughing:The coldest I recall was -58.Thats 58 degrees colder than the average freezer, it,s cold up here. The summers can go a bit over 100 degrees, hows that for a range!:DDave

crusty,
I have actually been to MN in the winter and summer a couple times. The winter that I was there it was -30F with -60F wind chill. One of the summers that I was there it was hotter in MN than in AL. One of our vendors is in Plymouth right outside Minneapolis.
