I read comments on hinged box-blades. I'm planning on a BB purchase in the spring. It was noted to buy a hinged model with the option of a locking pin?. I am assuming this means to be able to lock the hinge for stationary purposes. Have been doing my homework on what to look for : captive pins, thick steel (1/2"), replaceable/adjustable scarifiers--easily adjustable. I was dead-set on buying a Midwest BB30-60 because of the comments about heavier is better but they don't have hinged models. Who offers lockable hinged models ?. Is it worth it ?.

If it's an argument between heavy/hinged and hinged/lockable, go with heavy. I bought a Gannon Landscaper LB120 that is a 66" wide with retractable scar bar and hinged lockable rear blade. Weight is around 900#.

$were in the $1400 range 5-6 years ago. Sure to be more now...

The only down side to not having lockable, is it will be slightly more work to get a smooth surface with some soil types. However, drop the scarifiers and make a few extra passes and it will smooth right out.
