Here comes the RAIN !!!

/ Here comes the RAIN !!! #321
The last two days, I've gotten just over an inch and a quarter, it's 70 degrees with a high forecast today to be 73 and a 100% chance of more rain (barely sprinkling right now). I love it!

We received 2.5 inches yesterday, waahoo! It soaked in, no runoff to the stock tanks. Has been raining all night. Haven't been out to see what it looks like. yesterday, 20 miles east of here, in Salado, it was reported 12 inches fell, flooding Salado Creek.

An update: Checked my rain gauge when I fed the animals. We got over 1.5 inches last night and it is still raining. Still not much runoff. The ground is absorbing it like a dry sponge. Also, the newspaper reported that Salado received 13 inches yesterday. Wow! Glad we didn't get that. It would have washed out our road and lower dam.

This is great news for you fellows in central TX; although, too much too quickly I think. We have only received about 3/4" so far, but expect more today. Hopefully, we'll get some runoff to help fill ponds. Mine still have water, but they are down 4-1/2 to 5 feet.

More rain right now.... 100% runoff. Neighbor had fence washed out, cows on road... he's working fence in rain...good day for me to work in shop and clean things up... :D Will be plenty of repair work to do when it stops raining.

I'm at one inch in my rain gauges and no sign of any runoff. I'm not too worried about that since my ponds are not down very much. I cut all the grass on my place almost a month ago and it hasn't rained here since the end of July. Nothing is growing and the grass has started to turn brown. I really want to spray my pastures, but want the grass growing before I do this, so I don't stress out the grass that I want to keep alive while killing off the weeds. Right now, I think that I have enough rain to kick start my fields and be able to spray in a week or two!!!!! I'm very happy.

We're just getting a very light rain with no sign of an end to it. I applied Scott's Wintergard fertilizer to my yard Wednesday, and I watered most the day then, but now in the last 2 or 3 days, I'm up to nearly two and a half inches of rain. Couldn't ask for anything much better than that.

Have had 2.75 inches so far this week, but want a frog strangler for some good runoff, need to fill my tank. Heavy rain just missing us as always. But will take anything we can get.

Be careful what you (blub, blub) wish for...(blub..blub)

Moved tractor around in front yard, grass covered, in between showers, am on a hill top.... fundamentally flat..... began to spin all tires while in 4 wheel drive..had to lock rear tires to make progress... 5 inch rut in yard now...

TexasJohn, saw in the news last night you had 14", wow! We got 5" over the last 3 days, that brings the years total to 11".

This past week is the first time I've seen green grass that wasn't watered in our pastures around here. I wish this batch would head West to California to help those poor firefighters out over there.

I can't remember when we had this much rain come down so slowly and soak in. This has been the perfect rain event for us with no heavy downpours, just slow and steady. At 5:30 am I checked my rain gauge and it says 4.1" with light rain still falling. I could not be happier.:):) I do need to figure out a way to get into my garden to pick okra, tomatoes, and peppers.

Bird, I should have done like you and put down some fertilizer, but I also need to aerate and put out some seed for winter. This next week may be a good time to do that. I'm just hoping that this rain kickstarts my bluebonnet seeds I spread all over both sides of my driveway. If they germinate and sprout, I'll be one happy camper.

I don't know which is the oddest; as much as 14" in the past week or as little as 11" this year. We got another inch and a half overnight, and it's still raining, so that brings us to 4.5" for the past week, and 32.32" for the year. I think our "normal" or "average" is 34" a year, so in 8.5 months we're getting close already. Of course 6" on May 2 raised our total a bit.

I'm sitting at almost 4.5" I have had allot of runoff, constant drizzle with a few downpours for good measure. Hopefully my pond has filled.

The creek that runs through my place (normally dry) is running good, where it crosses the road it's about 6" deep.

I considered planting some oats Thursday, glad I didn't since I would have lost quite a bit, but this will sure get some good moisture in the ground for the up coming weeks.

Bird...you know how the media exaggerates:rolleyes: I just found two open 5 gallon straight sided buckets sitting in the open in the back of my pickup.. each had 13.5 inches in it... 1/2 inch below the rim...thus, I claim it is an accurate measurement for my specific place.....

Glad you are getting the kind of rain that is good for you....

The media may exaggerate, but huge differences in the amount of rain in locations close to each other isn't unusual either. However, I do believe the NWS has some errors on their website, since it shows less than .3" of rain in the last 3 days at the Denton Municipal Airport, while I've gotten over 4.5" in my gauge. From my house to the airport is 10 miles by road; a little less in a straight line.

One day while we were building our house, Steph and I watched it rain on one side of our pond. The pond is just 3/4 of an acre. We were on the side of the house and totally dry, but the other side of the pond got drenched. We watched the rain drops hit the water and thought it would work it's way to us, but it never did. We stayed dry while that side of the pond received all the rain.

One of the weirdest weather events that I've ever been through.

We brought the rain. First it rained on us outside Flagstaff. Then, it rained good near Junction, Tx. Then, a couple days later, there was good rain in Corpus Christi. Since we left for home, there has been more rain over the lats week and a half. Heck, we even got rain here in the Sierra foothills, as soon as I started replacing the failed EPDM rubber roof on our 5th wheel...

I too am in Central Texas and am loving the rainfall... I live about half way between Georgetown and Bertram and a bit North of that line.. Several times I have emptied the rain gauge of 2.5, 3.7, 2.5, etc, and quite frankly, have lost track of total rainfall... probably in the neighborhood of 9 to 10-inches...
At the ranch near Lampasas, we have gotten between 4 and 5-inches and are thrilled...... but, we have had very little runoff at either location. The rains came in gentle bursts and most of it simply soaked in, which is a good thing. Unfortunately, the stock tanks, creeks and rivers have received very little of runoff. My new stock tank, constructed in January, does have a few inches of water in the bottom. Now that the ground is saturated, we seriously need a torrential downpour. Area lakes have seen very little change 'N that's not good. lol

After three days of mild rains that gave me a total of 2 3/4 inches of rain, we got hit this morning, dead center, by a strong cell. In the first 20 minutes, we received an inch of rain. In one hour, it rained 2 1/4 inches, and it's all running off into my ponds!!!!! That should fill my small pond and add quite a bit to my big one.

I'm at just over 5 inches since Friday evening when it all started here.
