JD 4320
Hello,

I have a JD 4320, which I love, but if I am on even a slight incline, it will roll.

I have to engage the parking brake.

I have never had a hydro before, but I do not think that this is supposed to happen. Is there an adjustment of some kind that will stop the machine from rolling?

Thanks in advance,

John

I'm sure those folks with hydros will post some replies...
I strongly suggest you not depend on the hydro to hold that tractor on an incline...or even a level surface. Please do use the parking brake.

I have a 4310 and it will roll slightly on a moderate grade, just a slow creep, have to be careful when I jump off, I put my bucket down to hold it back, I rarely use the parking brake.
I don't think you should expect it not to move at all, from my experience with other small garden tractor hydro's they would do the same thing.

My 4200 does it. It'll creep a little. As far as I know all hydros do it. That's what the parking brake's for.:D

Both my previous Kubotas would roll on even the slightest incline if I did not have the parking break on. My 3320 stays put in places my Kub used to roll. But if the hill is steep enough, I need to drop the box blade or use the break. That's just the nature of the beast, I suspect.

You suspect correctly... A hydro is nothing more than turbine vane that moves the drive shaft in whichever direction the hydraulic fluid pushes it in. In neutral (ie: not moving), there is simply no hyd pressure to move the shaft in either direction. But there is also nothing to stop the machine from rolling in either direction.

Okay, so that's a rather simplistic explanation, but its essentially how it works. Bottom line - if you don't want the machine to roll, use the brake (or bucket, blade, etc).

It will creep the least in the lowest gear (highest ratio A range on my 3320) range. I wish there was a park position on the range selector, especially when using my winch.

Thanks for all the replies!

I'll use my bucket and/or parking break, and feel better knowing nothing is wrong with the hydro.
