Was useing my Stihl 041AV chain saw today and it quit oiling the chain. Tried adjusting the oiler but it didn't help. It does have bar oil in it. The saw is 25 or so years old so I guess I can't complain. I think the oil pump gear is shot and have no idea where to get one or if it is worth the cost.
If I get a new saw, I'm thinking of the Stihl MS460 or Husky 575 XP. Any thoughts?.........Thank's George

Few things start a fight faster than the Stihl/Husky argument. I think they are both great saws. The Stihls use very little chain oil (which isn't always great) and the Huskys seems to throw a lot more chain oil.

Make sure all the orifices are clear and clean? Any tubes from the tank to pump or pump to bar maybe clogged or disconnected? I had a brand new Husky that did not oil; a supply tube had not been installed correctly...

Go to Stihl for the part...

Is the oil hole in the bar clean? May have a piece of sawdust clogging the oil pump intake too.

For a comparable saw, I bought a Stihl MS361 (20" bar) to "replace" my 041 (20" bar). I like the new saw but also still like the old one, and grab whichever is closer. Both work great, and IMO, fixing the oiler (I too suspect it's dirt) would be smart.

Thank's guys......cleaned saw up good Monday. Oiler hole seemed ok but cleaned some more. Still no go. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Called a dealer about 20 miles away and he offered to take the pump shaft and gear apart to check it. I made the trip.

Pump shaft and gear were okay. Showed little wear for 25+ year old saw. Found vent in oil fill cap plugged..! Duh.!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

He didn't have a MS460 in stock...(made CFO happy) so I had him change the sprocket and bought new clutch shoes, $89.00. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The rubber on the wrap around handle was shot, and the electrical tape wouldn't hold up. He said he thought he might be able to get the new rubber but it is a pain to put on. Said something about using air to help slip it on, or to order a new handle. Around $40.00. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I took the handle to Line X and had them spray it for $10.00.
At first he wanted $15.00 because I had a Rhino liner in my truck, but I told him it came that way. Works good, will see how long it holds up. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

It's the last $100.00 that I am going to put in this saw but I think it will last for a while anyway. Thank's again George
