That’s what it took, lots of blows with this.

Got the axle case all tore down, time to clean everything up. No metal chunks, everything turns smooth with no slop.

That's always a good sign. So, for future reference, it took just removing the bottom snap ring and a hammer to remove?
Proper choice of hammer... a shot-filled dead blow hammer like the one he used gives proper force without marring the surface. (y)

That is correct, probably had to strike it 100 times with that 4# shot hammer, and it came off very gradually.
