I'm in the process of getting a starter back on my latest tractor.
It was not installed when I got it so I'm looking for some help
w the two wires. I figure the lig one goes on the switch lug mounted to
the starters spring switch. Any idea on the light 12ga wire that
is also down by the starter? Any help would be great, thanks.

have you looked in the big thick service manual? I'm at work and my jd B manual is at home.. If no one has answered when i get off work at 11pm, I'll take a look and see if I can post something for you.

They both go to the large terminal - the smaller wire is power for the rest of the tractor and goes, I believe, to the ampmeter.

yea, so actually that small one goes to the light on the rear seat.

I reccomend getting the print on demand manual for that machine from JD.. it's about 90$ when i got mine and worth it.

the I&T manual ain't bad.. but the oem manual is better.

So how do I find stuff on a Model A on the site. I've found some other sites but the traffic is low.

I get nothing other than some reman stuff on generators on the jd site. I know the oil filters are still available as well as some other stuff. Long story short, I am now in possession of my Grandfather's Model A and frankly I am in over my head right now. I'll figure it out, it is in my garage right now, I took the fuel petcock off and I have a bucket full of fuel that is 20 years old that I drained from the fuel tank. Oh how that smells, and you just can't get the smell out.

I know, I know, this thread is old but I have read "sound" advice from soundguy in the past. I am betting he is still here. I found this site regarding my 2305.

Waiting on the I&T manual to arrive but I want to get this old tractor running, the engine is free and so was the tractor ;-) no pun intended.

Any suggestions on what to do with the fuel tank would be welcome.

the i&t manual is real basic.. like 1/4" thick.. the oem manual is over an inch.

bottom line.. chnage the oil, get spark and fuel.

I'd add some atf tot he cyls and roll it around a lil, get new plugs.. clean and gap points ( if it's a maggy.. have fun :) )

add new fuel and see where she goes. service air fitler too..

post back.

Thanks, Yeah, I saw in an old PDF download that you can add half a pint of oil with the pulgs in. I, in my stumbling acceptance of this "gift" have taken out the plugs and liberaly fogged it down with a can of fogging oil.

I am familiar with spark and fuel, I had a kick azz shop teacher about 30 years ago and it was one of my best subjects ;-)

Heard about hanging a tractor, do you think I need to go to that extent? I hope not cause the trees on my propery will have a hard time with it. ;-)

My worst issue right now is the gas tank. Plan is to take it out and some how clean it up. I am coming to find that spraying it down with carb cleaner is not the right approach.

I can't do anything until I get that gas tank clean. Don't think it would look good with a big plastic jug on top, but I think I konw how to do that.

BTW, that air filter came as a surprise to me, It is an oil can.

Last time I saw this thing was about 20 years ago, maybe more, I was a kid farmer, my grandad died when I was 10 and my aunt and uncle took it over, they quit when I was about 24, give or take 4. Please keep that in mind. I got all the benifits of the farm without the hardships. I loved it. I'm now 46
That said, I want this thing running.

yep.. oil bath air filters were common on equipment into the mid 70's.

it's easy to remove, and if the media is dirty, clean it with mineral spirits or diesel.. then once all cleaned up. oil the media a bit, reinstall , and fill the cup to indicated level.

cleaning the tank?

flush her out.. diesel works well.. plus adds a lil upp cyl lube when you run her the first time.. kills mosquito's too ;)

it's REAL common to use a small tank to run a tractor for test purposes. most of us have a 1/2g lawnmower tank with a nipple output on it and a small fuel filter inline to some fuel hose that we can hookup to a carb to test run a tractor.

a few have even made up nicer metal tanks using 1g 'thinner' cans with a nipple soldered to the bottom.. that and fuel hose and you are ready.

i'd reserve swinging her from a tree just yet...
