Kubota L3400, Farmall A
Hi gang,
My long weekend project hit a snag. I am supposed to be planting warm season grass seed as part of a conservation project to make habitat. But I found the the hydraulics of the grass drill do not match that on my tractor. The tractor was new this spring and this is my first time using anythings hydraulics, so I am at the bottom of the learning curve. And here I am asking the folks who know.
I have a Kubota L3400. The hydraulics are labeled Parker 6601-6-6 PHK and maesures a 3/4" opening. The drill is a Truax Flex II. The hydraulic line has a max diameter of about 15/16". What coupler do I need to make these two play together?

Thanks,
Glen

Not exactly an easy question as there are so many different couplers out there!

The Parker couplers on your tractor are 3/8", but who knows whats on your drill...knowing the manufacture of the drill is not going to help us.

You will need to determine what size fitting is on the end of the hose-it's probably a NPT type fitting, measure it and count the threads-then check the chart I linked.

Then you will have to find a 3/8" QD male nipple that will fit your hose.

TSC has some fittings in stock...Is there any hydraulic shops near you?

Check your phone book. Some hose/hyd shops (like mine :D) have 24/7 service for a case like yours.

It sounds like 1/2" hose, but we really need more details to help you. Fittings are probably either NPT like Kenny mentioned or o-ring thread. If you want to take a road trip about 4 1/2 hours north, I could hook you up. I'm up the Delaware river far enough you can cross in some spots and not get your ankles wet.

OK, lots of letters and abbreviations and new information that I never had any clue existed makes me go HUH??? So I got the bright idea to take a picture of the drill connection. Take a look....

Also, is there a website that can teach me some of the terminology?

Glen

Those are Pioneer style couplers, but in 1/2" rather than the 3/8" you need. Take one of those with you to TSC or a hydraulic shop and see if they can hook you up-literally:D

I'm not sure why JD would use such small couplers on the tractor. Around here virtually anything used by a normal farmer has 1/2" Pioneer couplers. If you're going to be borrowing much equipment you might consider changing out the couplers on your tractor to 1/2" size. Or make some short male to female adapter hoses. Changing the nipples on the drill will let you run right now but you can expect to have the same problem with the next piece of equipment you borrow.

If you tell where you hit the problem I missed it. If this is your first hyd hose hook up attempt it could be you are not operating the couplers properly. No idea on the ones on your tractor, some you just push the hose into it to connect and then pull it out to disconnect. But some require you to pull a sleeve back to open the fitting and at same time push the male fitting in. Can be a little tricky. Also if have pressure on the fittings that can make it very hard to connect with certain type of fittings. At same time JD and probably other brands may have had their own fitting that were a little different. If you need fittings, pay the price and buy one at the Kubota dealership so you have the right size to fit your female coupler all they will need it to know is the type of threads and size on the hose. At same time they do sell adapters fittings.

IF YOU HAVE PRESSURE on the hoses the only way I know to break it is to cut off the tractor and work the control, if in the hoses place a rag over the fitting and push it against a hard surface. The rag protects you from what can be at best getting oily to high pressure hitting and hurting you.

Here is an update. First, trying to find something over the Thanksgiving weekend was problematic. I wound up at the nearest TSC, found an adapter (Pioneer 4069-4) that was labeled 'Interchange Adapter for Compact Tractors'. Problem is they only had 1. So on to the next TSC store (Another 25 miles), where they had 2. Tried them and neither end fit the equipment. Wasted a beautiful day in the process.

Monday, I went to a hydraulics shop near where I work. They told me the cheapest way was to change the end on the hoses and sold me a nipple to fit the tractor and a 1/2" to 3/8" reducer. But on my first attempt (with small tools), I was not able to budge it. Is this feasable for me to do? What sort of tools do I need? Should I look for an adapter instead, regardless of it being more expensive?

Thanks for the help,
Glen
