MF 1010 4wd hydro, loader ,scoop, 330 hrs bought second hand.

Tractor was sluggish reponding to the backward/forward control, seeming to get a little worse each time I moved it.

Hydo oil was low so I added two quarts, cluch play was 1 1/2" and I adjusted to 3/4 inch.

Linkage to control pedal looks to be in order.

Filters to the Hydro unit have not. been changed since I don't now when. ( bought used).

PTO's turn if engaged.

Tractor will not move backwards or forwards.

Any Ideas appreciated.

Thanks.

I would give it a fluid and filter change. Also, clean the suction filter in the transmission. Chances are the suction filter is plugged. It is normally a wire mash part that pulls out and you clean it. I'm guessing that the 1010 has one.

Jerry, I may me a million miles off line on this, but does the 1010 have wet brakes? Yes or no, next question goes to Gerry (original poster) Are you sure the tractor has the correct hydraulic oil in it?

I've got a friends 4020 Deere being hauled to my house tomorrow. He bought it for a "first tractor". As soon as he got it home, he drained all the hy-tran and replaced it.....with 90wt gear oil. Not only did the hydraulics become sluggish instantly, that oil made the wet brakes shed their lining. It "dissolved" into a goop that clogged the filter/screen in the hydraulic sump. Now it gets new brakes, a flush of the hydraulic sump, and CORRECT oil. Owners comment? "Oil is oil, isn't it"?

I don't know what wet brakes are ( FYI - the 1010 is a compact 16hp built in Japan for MF).

I assume it's the right fluid as it seemed to be OK until recently. ( I've run it about 30hours). The orginal owner ( My father in law) had the fluids/filters changed after 50 but maybe not since.

I'm going to take Jerry's advice.

Definitely a #3, I seem to do it while it's raining.

Wet brakes run submerged in oil, usually oil that's common to the hydraulic system.

By the description of previous ownership and maintenance, I'd say my speculation is way off.

Try the filters and screen, along with a fresh change of oil and see where that goes.

We ALL take the #3 route now and then.

I'm 99% sure that they don't have wet brakes.

My 1010 has dry brakes, but it's also a straight drive transmission. I think the hydro will have the same brakes based on my I&T shop manual for it.

Took the advice and changed the hydo oil and all three filters.

After 10-15 minutes of working the pedals and hydraulics the tractor got moving normally. ( I assume this was time for the filters to fill and pressure to build).

Is there anywhere to bleed the system and/or check for leaks as it seems that any air getting in could affect performance?

Thanks everybody for the help so far.

Glad to hear that it is working better. When you move the lift up and down and move the loader up and down that will bleed the system. It will speed it up some if you have a loader to hold the control valve at its limits for a few seconds at each end. But, just running everything to the limits and back will get the air out.

1010 is moving better but the last time I used it I had another problem.

Had to work the pedal back and forth for about 10 minutes before it would move backwards or forward.

Started working backwards before it started working forwards. Even stuck in the depressed backward postion a few times.

After all this it seemed to be pulling well in either direction.

Someone mentioned a suction filter when talking about changing the filters.
I did the filters but found no suction filter on the tranny and there was no reference on my owners manual.

Any other ideas?

As always, Inputs appreciated.
