Hello to all. Just bought ourselves a nice 60 acre property in North Texas. 55 acres ag exempt for hay. We spent 2.5 months trying to find someone to cut and bale before giving up and just buying all the equipment ourselves. :) Now that's not the sanest move in the world but it's done:)

Come to find out the two gentleman that had been custom baling/shredding the area around us for the last 20 years are suddenly [one passed away/ one too ill to work] unavailable and now EVERYONE is scrambling for someone to bale their property.

Question #1: What type of insurance do we need to have to do this [already have equipment fully insured]?

Question #2: Are there stock "contracts" that custom balers use?

Question #3: What's the best way to work the pay? Do you take a deposit at the start and the balance at the end? Ask for all upfront? Wait until the end?

Total newbies here so any suggestions are greatly appreciated.....

1. as for insurance i cant answer that q.
2.we never use a contract to have our hay baled by a custom baler.nor do we put a contract on if we custom bale for some1.
3.you get payed when you finish baling some1s hay.
4.we charge by the bale to cut rake an bale hay.example $25 a bale to cut rake an bale.

The most important Thing I've learned the past few years of haying is TIMING. When to cut, when to tedder, When to rake, And when to bale. The weather affects above all. The quality of your hay depends on it. Get it wrong and you'll have a stinking mess at best. At the worst, a blazing fire fueled with many bales of hay gathered with much work. Get it completely right and you'll have delicious high test hay that no one will pay for commensurate with your efforts.

Welcome to farming.
