I don't have any ballasts nor do I have loaded front tires. I'm pretty positive the tires I have on there are E1 Ag tires, they're definitely not turf tires.

So it sounds like the general consensus with my current setup is that the 6.5 ft medium duty would be my best bet?? Would those 550 lb discs do a sufficient job at turning and cutting the ground? Or am I gonna need to add weight to get it to work good? It would be nice if the medium duty would work well cause they are half the price of the Heavy ones.

They will work, but will take a little longer. You can ballast the disc to help.

Ps, water and rv antifreeze is cheap tractor ballast.

i think the lighter one should work fine. if you break the ground first with a plow.

here's a couple shots of my old cheap disc with the 3000 discing 006.JPGdiscing 008.JPG this disc is considerably lighter than the medium duty one you are considering- i would think

The trade off with a lighter disc like mine, sometimes requires loading the disc up with whatever you can.
Also since you have no front ballast It seems like the medium disc would be a better choice for keeping the front tires grounded.

Thanks for the input from everyone, looks like I'll go ahead and save $700 and go with the medium duty one.

Toss weight on if it doesn't cut as good... Should be fine. If you are loosing traction, load your rears

If the Disc Harrow you buy does not cut as you wish, shorten the Top Link, which will shift weight from the rear smoothing gangs to the front gangs, which are the primary cutters. Adjusting the front pans more aggressively will also make the implement cut more aggressively, at the price of increased draft resistance.

My usual Disc Harrow adjustment has 60% of the weight on the cutting gangs, 40% of the weight on the rear, smoothing gangs. Then fine tune to the conditions of the day.
