I looked into a pellet stove a few years ago when i was looking at woodstoves. One of the largest wood/pellet/fireplace stores in the state stopped selling pellet stoves to customers because they could NOT get pellets to sell...... at any price !!!! That helped me to decide on a woodstove...... well, that and i get my wood for free !! I drive down to WayneB's house when he's not home and fill my pickup !! He has so much wood stacked up, he doesn't even know he's heating my house too !!! In all seriousness..... between my BIL working on a road crew, and getting me wood when they cut back along the sides of the road, and me scrounging anywhere i can......... i have yet to pay for any firewood. But i sure do work for it. As far as buying it by the "rick", or "face cord"...... that is illegal in NH. Cordwood can only be sold by the cord, or fraction thereof. Sort of seems like a scam to me....... what exactly IS a rick, anyway????

Scott, You gotta lay off! With both of us taking it, he's gonna notice! :D

Well all I can say to both of you guys is you haven't noticed the camera nor were you there when I am sitting in the deer stand just south of the wood pile, moved up to the 270 by the way.

Growing up we sold face cord wood, it was usually 16" long 4 feet high and 8 feet long. Here in NH that would be 1/3 of a cord! I am not sure if I would go out and buy cord wood at todays prices, just too much work to be paying top dollar for it. On the other hand I don't think I would sell cord wood unless I could get top dollar for it (for the same reason)!

Note to self: Start wearing bullet-proof vest when thieving wood from WayneB's four story tall wood pile.

I agree with you Wayne...... i sold one cord this year to someone i know for $225..... as thats what they offered (i have plenty). If i had to pay the going rate for cordwood, i'd just turn up the trermostat and buy oil. At the same time.... though i have been able to scrounge enough wood (got this years, and next years all cut & split), its too much work to sell for even $250/cord. Honestly, i enjoy working on my wood, but doing it to sell would make it a chore.

I suspect the non-exact definition of what a "rick" is...... is exactly why it is illegal to sell wood that way in this state.

I thought a rick was as well defined as a cord, but just not in your area.(??)
I always thought that it was more of a buyer beware type of thing. We always stacked our wood between two trees, and tried to get just a little more than a rick in it. Anyone buying wood was required to pick out the stack they wanted and haul it themselves. Later on, Daddy started delivering some wood but that was strickly sold as a pickup truckload, and the buyer got to stack it themselves, as Daddy just did the driving. All wood and the amount of it was approved by the buyer before it was paid for. The condition of the wood, type, age, and how tight it was stacked were all things to take into consideration when buying, and we didn't want any complaints, so we priced the wood, and let you choose your posion.
The guys in the cookie cutter housing south of me that sell stacks of wood along the road are making a killing selling it, but few of the owners have room to store any amount of wood. I think the deed restrictions limit storing it outside in your yard, which is why I don't like in a deed restriced area!
Ductape,
You have seen the TV program of the bank robbers that out gunned the law officers by having high powered m/g's and complete body armor? Seems it is hard protect your head and feet, and few body armor will stop a .270 round that Wayneb is using! Be careful, as all the wood in the world won't keep you warm when he lets all of your blood out in the snow! As tempting as that pile is, wouldn't it be better to hire that work done? A teenager might be the trick, since they would know everything about it!

No offence to anyone buying or selling wood by the rick, there just doesn't seem to be an official definition in these parts, and thats apparently why our state does not allow selling any wood in any measurement other than a cord (or fraction thereof). I do suppose you could sell it by the rick if you "officially" measured and sold the rick as a half, or third of a cord (or whatever portion of a cord your rick turned out to be). But i suspect anything in writing would want to be worded as the fraction of a cord.

I have seen that video you refer to..... and its impressive ! Those guys were prepared, weren't they? I know what you are saying about the teenagers nowadays. They would know they'd just get a slap on the wrist, if even that. Of course Wayne knows i'm just razzing him, just cuz he is a fellow New Hampshire-ite. I would never actually take anything that didn't belong to me.... just the opposite, if Wayne needed a load of wood, i'd be happy to give it to him.

We knew you would try to cover your supply chain with some sort of explanation like that, LOL!!!
I mentioned investing in an outdoor wood heater that pipes the heat into the house and the wife said she didn't think we would need it. Thirty minutes later she said something about being cold, and the thermostat was on 68 and the inside temp was 71. I told her if she had that wood burning furnace, she could turn it up all she wanted!

Hey Ducktape is also a TSC shopper so it just isn't his fault! For sure either one of us would give someone a load of wood if they were down and out. Gee we had our thermosats set at 62 and we thought it was too high. Now with just the wood stove the house is just too hot.

A neighbor has one of the outsid wood burners, cost a bunch to put it in, but he really likes it. Has a source for the junk wood he is burning so I guess once installed it is a good way to go. It is funny to drive by there in July and see a major amount of smoke coming out of the chimney pipe! I always think they must be taking a long shower.

I would like one, but the wife doesn't like the idea, so it will be up to me to buy it, install it, feed it, maintain it, repair it, cut the wood for it, and keep it clean. Probably easier to just put on a jacket and let her freeze her tuss off, lol. If it gets below 74, it is cold to her!

I payed $2.28 for my heating oil this winter.
When I bought this house five years ago, it had electric baseboard heating. No one is rich enough to afford that. So I had an oil furnace installed with a 275 gallon tank. The house was partitioned into two zones. Unfortunately the computer area is in the cold zone so I use a small kerosene heater to take the chill off.
Then i got to thinking it over and installed a second tank. Now I have three tanks and use two for a years worth of heating and hot water.
My last purchase was in July and the lowest prices hereabouts is $3.09/gal.

We had the tank filled on September 12 so from then until now we only used 70 gallons

How are you guys getting them to deliver less than 100 gallons?
I thought there was a minimum of at least 100 gallons for delivery!
