Mornin Wayne,
Ouch !!! Thats rough to swallow for sure ! I like your idea of closing down the portion of the house thats not being used ! ;) We do the same thing at our Ct home, both my boys have moved out and we kind of closed down there bedrooms. I heat mainly with the woodstove in the basement, but I also have a gas insert stove in the family room fire place that burns propane. Propane in Ct is $2.95  but I also have a free standing propane stove in the Vt house, propane in Vt from Amerigas is $2.15 per gallon ! Anyways that woodstove is paying some handsome dividends this year ! :)

Well, closing down the old part of the house was something we could do this year so I decided to just go ahead and do it. We had the tank filled on September 12 so from then until now we only used 70 gallons and I just shut down the old house the end of November. So a large share of that was for hot water. It will be interesting to see how much oil we will use over the next few months.

For the longest time oil and gas was always cheaper in VT. I got into the habit of filling up there on our way up north and to fill up on the return trip, but I noticed in October that the gas prices were up even with NH.

I am cutting and splitting 2010 wood right now so we are covered for the next few years!

Wayne,
I just got topped off @ $3.249/gal, net after discount = $3.149.
I paid the last bill on 11/5 so, only 65.9 gallons since early November. We burn wood on the weekends. I just cleaned the pellet stove last Sunday night so, she'll be using that during the week while I'm on the road. Thermostats are set at 62*.

Torin, are you buying from JR? We decided not to do the pre-pay this year. Not that it was a major problem last year, but we did have money left and they took care of us, but didn't have to. I decided this year that we would try our very best to keep usage down to as little as possible

Our thermostats are set at 60 in the new house, but none of the heaters have come on (while we are at home) for the past three years. Only time they would ever be used is if we were going to be out of town for more than one day.

Wayne,
We're using Johnny Prescott from Concord. I had been using Crawford-Vogel-Wenzel from Manchester. I'd been using them since '93 and just continued when we moved out here. The two brothers parted ways and it didn't work out well for us so, made a switch this year. I should've gone with the Dunbarton oil just to keep it local. I have no idea why I didn't. If there is ever a reason to switch, I will make a point at going local.

I wish I could find heating oil for $3.159 per us gallon. I just had my tank filled, I paid $0.889 CAD per litre plus 14% tax for a total of $3.841 per US gallon. No discounts if paid early. I paid the same price last year. Canada has more oil than Saudi Arabia and we still have the highest fuel prices.

I negotiate my oil price each year, last year I got CAD$100 off and 100 liters free along with 4 cents per liter off the posted price. This year was 100 liters free and 6 cents per liter off the posted price. Last delivery was 80.9 cents minus the 6 cents which equates to 74.9 cents per liter or CAD$2.83 per American gallon or CAD$3.40 per Canadian gallon or by todays dollar close US$2.74 per American gallon or US$3.30 per Canadian gallon. I used about $1000-1200 per year the last 4 or 5 years to heat my house and garage (approx 2300 sq. ft.) I keep the temp at about 68-69 degrees.

Wayne,
I suspect i'm in for some sticker shock myself this year. A few years ago i installed a woodstove in our house. It has been 2 and 1/2 years since i've purchased any heating oil, and i was all set to go another year without having to buy any. We have 2 - 275 gal tanks, and in the past two winters we used about 110 gals/yr because the woodstove does so well. Anyway... long story short, we had a very minor chimney fire this year and we have no choice but to use oil only till we can get our chimney relined. I suspect i'll be buying a couple hundred gallons in the next couple weeks, and i'm NOT looking forward to it !!!!

Don't you love it! And in the north west some areas want to outlaw wood burning.

There'll always be some looney out to bust your chops. There are plenty of folks that want to outlaw wood burning across the nation.... The local looneys have been trying to outlaw land clearing burning which isn't quite the same as residential woodstoves but not far off. You give these guys an inch and they'll take a mile.

I got three words for you guys that do not mind cutting some wood, Outdoor Wood Boiler!

2nd year on mine. I have not purchased propane for over a year and a half now. I used to burn over 1000 gallons in propane a year. No more. Now it is 8 to 10 chord of wood for my heat and hot water.

how much do you have to pay for your wood? about $50 for what they call a "rick": which i think would be $100 a cord: if the "rick" was 2x4x8: but the wood i usually only about 14-16 inches long; we have some folks that have tried for a couple years now to run a pellet manufacturing co: but they can't seem to stay in business long enough. they start off with 2 shifts working and then end up with one, part time...
