Head phone ear protection

I wear a 3XL motorcycle helmet, so I have a relatively large head. Have not had issue with shooter's earmuffs.

I have an "active cancelation" pair, forgot brand but one of the common ones. Use it turned off, but with Apple AirPods in my ears. The earmuffs help keep the AirPods in.

Perhaps I don't have problems with glasses making a noise leak in the earmuffs because I also have the AirPods in my ears. Then again I wear very light titanium frame glasses. Very small earpiece, or whatever that thing is called.

When shooting at the range they strongly suggest (and provide) -30dBA foam ear plugs and over the ear earmuffs. They are right.

Look at isotunes. I have had a pair of the earbuds that has a wire from ear to ear but Bluetooths to your phone and love 'em!
I have a pair of them also and they're great. ....but saying that.
I couldn't afford to keep buying the proprietary tips, the inner plastic sleeve that screws onto the actual bud would split, only last a day or two. At $20 for 5 pair it gets expensive not to mention $20 for 20 cents worth of foam and plastic is a rip.

I very much like the EarFun Pro 3. Great for the tractor, the zero turn, and flying.
I ordered a pair of them as I was looking for a pair of in ear buds, they've got excellent reviews.
I must have odd shaped ears as I've tried numerous types of in ear buds and they either don't feel like they're going to stay in or start hurting after awhile.
I've got a pair of the JLabs over ear type and they're great fitting and stay in place and i use them under muffs . The sound is not...right for lack of a better word.

I particularly like the noise cancelling earbuds in the tractor cab. They deaden the steady engine noise but allow me to hear other sudden sounds, like a failing implement.

(yeah, I'm late to the party!)

I wear some in-ear monitors that are plugged into an IPOD to send some music. These will muffle "some" outside sounds. Over these, I then wear some over-ear muffs. I got the highest rated (in muting) I could find.

My brother in law says he doesn't want to wear anything so he can hear if something snaps. What I've tried to tell him is I can still HEAR things, they're just muted.

So, if I'm motoring along cutting a field and engine starts knocking, blade flies off the carrier, I run over a branch.... I'll still hear it. I'm just not deafened by the drone nor, the thwack of whatever is the odd, new sound of something breaking.

I like having a library of tunes out with me as just listening to the drone of the engine noise carrying on incessently... gets a bit boring.

You DO get accustomed to the lower level of sounds (at least I do)

You are correct telling your BIL that the sounds are muted but still heard. With the proper ear protection the sound is reduced to a level that won't damage your ears while at the same time you can hear important sounds, such as a gearbox failing. People who don't use hearing protection and use the excuse that they need to hear stuff that fails loudly, like a PTO, are either fooling themselves or just plain pretending. You are correct, you hear the sounds that need attention while at the same time protecting you hearing. I have lost hearing even though I used protection, I just didn't use enough. It sucks. I have hearing aids. I dislike them but they help. Please try to convince your BIL to use hearing protection.

The EarFUN buds arrived today, so far I'm impressed with the sound. The noise cancelling works with an ambient steady noise and the ability to customize the sound is good also. I wasn't too concerned with the noise cancelling as I use muffs anyway. Time will tell if they start hurting my ears which so far has been the problem with any I've tried other than the surface mount type that don't go into the ear and the over the ear type.
Anyone recommend a good foam eartip rather than the silicone ones?

I use the rippled ear tips. Have the same pair on there that I started with. Never tried the smooth ones.
