Deerlope,

About how fast are you going while snow blowing? The snow depth looks like it's about 8 inches. I am considering the purchase of a front mount blower and I want to compare the time it takes to plow against the time it might take to snow blow.

Blowing snow away is always slower than plowing. But the big advantage of blowing is that you never have to handle that same snow again. During winters with frequent snowfalls, plowed banks start encroaching the road. Then a lot of time is spent pushing it back in 6 foot chunks. With a blower, once through and you're done. This could be why so many snowblowers are sold in Canada. My 2 cents.

I think the depth was more around 5". Going thu the pines pic I have to go slower cause it is rough so I was probably in 8th at 1600RPM's maybe 5 to 6 MPH. the other pic I am always in 10th at 1600RPM's and about 8 MPH. There is very little strain on the whole machine. Do it once and you are done. I plowed for years and it goes like this, push it way back for the next storm, then find out after 2 or 3 more that you are running out of room, so next push the banks back some nice day when it is warm and thawing cause when it freezes you ain't going to touch it. With a snowblower "once and done"(sorry I got carried away".

I'd say your speed is about the same as mine. I try to go as fast as I can (8 max). That would be perfect for me. At the moment, the banks are getting high and the drive is getting narrow. So I'm forced to make several passes, which takes extra time. If I only made one pass, even if it were 25% slower, I'd still save time by not making multiple passes.

This sounds real good to me. I wonder if I can rent a blower for our next storm...

Thanks Deerlope.

I used my old square chuter snow blower on my Gravely last winter on that 7" of sleet that we got. Snow plow wouldn't touch it, just rode up over it. It was rather an awsome thing: shot snow/sleet out about 70' or so into the air and 20 or 30' out to the side. Had to watch when close to the house to not toss a bunch of snow into the garage or through a window.

The old square chuter is probably about 40 years old. It's about the first one that Gravely made. The guy I bought my approx. 1988 Gravely from had an older Gravely that the square chuter had been bought for. It's virtually like new; whereas, the snow plow was a scratched and beat up and has a new steel shoe on it.

I don't really look at the MPH's. I watch the tach and when I see the RPM's start to drop I will down shift. those speeds that I gave you were only estimates.

The Gravely is a well built piece of equipment. I have only used one once and it had a brush cutter on it.

I would love to agree with you on the "blow it away once" theory, but after today, I just can't do that. I plowed the snow off the driveway twice so far today and it still is blowing back onto the drive. The front of the garage doesn't even look like the snow was removed. The wind has been howling all day and it doesn't matter on a day like today what you use. If I had used the blower, it still would come back, just as it has done all day long. I will admit you are correct about the snow on the sides of the road. In 20 years, I haven't had the problem of the road getting too narrow, because I push it back far enough the first time. If I could get a cab for my BX-22 at a reasonable price, I would put a blower on it, but at $3500 for the cab and $2500 for the blower, my old Ford is still worth keeping. While all the rest of TBN is looking forward to the next storm, I am looking forward to Spring and the melting of what we have. If it doesn't snow again this winter, won't bother me at all.... Just look toward seeing some green where there is all white.... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Orange, Red, Blue, Green, etc looks better against a green backround than a white backround..... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Junkman
The cab on in the pics that I posted here I built that for less than 500 bucks. It has no heater but it sure keeps the snow off. The snow was really blowing here yesterday also, driveway way starting to drift back in on the edges but did not have to blow again.

Amen to that, Junkman! I am glad to have the Kubota for when I need it but I'll be just as happy if I don't.
