Hi, I have a friend that is going to buy a new riding mower and he wants to know which company make the best engine for it? Kohler or Briggs & Stratton or What?

Someone told him that Kohler engines have plastic gears in them. Is this true?

Now this depends on what type of engine your getting ,and what kind of use do you want out of it? briggs and Kohler, both make a commercial industry engine!!! one is called by briggs Vanguard, and other, by kohler command, these are the top of the line! I have a briggs vanguard I put over 1000 hr in two season of commericial grass cutting,on this engine with no problems!!and sounds brand new. take a look at my avartor!

I would suggest he not worry about company as much as specific model. All the manufacturers seem to have occasional models that have a lemony taste. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It's worthwhile to snoop the professional lawn and garden forums and see what the pros think of a particular engine. LawnSite is a good one.

I have several Briggs engines and a Kohler Command. They all run fine. Some of the Briggs engines are over 20 years old. They outlasted the equipment they were attached to! The Kohler is over 4 years old, but only has a little over 100 hours on it. Nice running machine.

As was mentioned, alot depends on what you are going to do with the engine and what kind of load the engine is designed for... that being homeowner VS commercial use.

My 25hp Kohler Command blew a head gasket after about 2 years use. I guess it was a problem for a while and they fixed it. I'm sure they all have their occasional troubles, even the vaunted Honda.

Terry,
The Kohler & Briggs are good engines, but if you have to listen to them run for a long time save your hearing and go with a Honda. I have 15 pieces of equipment with Honda engines on them, I will not purchase a piece of equipment unless it has a Honda motor on it.

Thanks for the information. This friend of mine wants to buy a Sear brand riding mower and it will be a 26 or 27 HP with gear trans which is now very hard to find. Sears has stopped selling the 27 HP with gear trans.

I still remember Pearl Harbor and couldn't bring myself to buy a Honda...don't care how great it is.

I wonder if the survivors of Hiroshimo and Nagasaki feel the same about products made in the USA?
