I have a B7510 and have a 5' King Kutter tiller. Clay or breaking new ground is pretty rough. I usually run the tiller in 540 rpm with a high engine rpm on the first pass then 960 rpm and low engine rpm on the second pass. It makes for a very powder like soil. I MUST do this in LOW range and 1st gear, not enough HP to do any other way. If I had it to do all over again I would get a more narrow tiller.

nitroxn,
For your part of the country with most likely 100% clay, you may even be better off getting a two bottom 12" turning plow to break the ground initially. Tilleingclay,,,,on unbroken ground really taxes,,,even a heavy tractor/tiller combination. If you could find a decent priced two bottom 12" plow,,if you tractor struggles to pull it in the clay,,,all you have to do is take one of the bottom off. try and find a plow that still has the coulters on it,,also. This is actually hard to find,as most guys have ditched the coulters on older plows. These really help,,,when turning unturned clay / sod for the first time!

Take Care,
Barry

I got a 48" and a B7500 and I can't imagine using anything bigger. Now, 'round here we got lots of clay and mutiple passes is required but it still is amazing to me how well they work.

I have a 5ft tiller on a B2910 and I can't imagine having a bigger tiller. The weight is a factor and on each additional pass while breaking new ground I can feel it cutting through the soft tillings and hitting the hard ground beliow. Tilling works a machine hard... So going slow is the best way to be kind to your equipment. I broke ground on a new garden this year, and I tilled right from field sod. I tilled 5 passes and added 15 or 20 yards of well composted manure and tilled 4 more times. So even having a bit more HP than you, I still went slow.... Also up here in New England... We have rocks!... I'll attach a pic... you can see around the edges the rock have been picked out and layed to the side.

Regards,
Chris
