Hauling hay equipment

I just purchased a Hesston 1270 swather and 4590 bailer.
Now I need to get them home and I'm not sure if what the best way to do it is. Can I just pull them behind our truck? And if so what kind of hitch do I need to do it with ? The baler seems like it won't be terribly difficult, but the swather is a 14ft cutting width.

Both of those items are easily towed behind a pickup with no special hitch needed.

You just need a plain drawbar and hitch pin.

So, I take a typical draw bar with a ball on it and remove the ball from it and put a hitch pin through the eye on the baler / moco through the hole where the ball typically goes?
Will need to go get a standard draw bar then. I've got one of those turn over jobbies with three different hitch sizes on it.

BTW what size hitch pin ?

Use the largest pin that will fill the holes with the least amount of slop. This will keep the holes from beating them selves out of round. Be sure to put a clip in the hitch pin. If you can get a shock hitch for your truck that would help but not necessary.

Be very carfull and think about what you are doing moving equipment. From the questions you are asking I get the feeling you don't have much expirence with this stuff.

How far will you have to tow your hay equipment? The new tire I had to buy for my JD 336 cost me $175 - after my brother got impatient driving 25mph - and decided to try 40mph!!

The tire has instructions on the sidewall to limit highway speeds to 25mph, too.

I don't know if I've ever seen anyone "tow" a 14' self-propelled swather, before... 'Course there's a whole lot of things I've never seen before...

That said, I've seen a fair number of swather's just motoring down the road (or actually along the side of the road).

Seen lot's of 'em with the swather on a trailer and the header on another trailer, etc.

Most hitch pins are 3/4" or 7/8" diameter. Varies.

Towed my MF124 baler behind my F150 about 30 miles to get it home after I bought it. Just removed the ball and used a pin (like the one used in the top link of a 3-point hitch).



Kept at 25 mph or less on the back roads.

You'll have to remove the head from that swather and probably make two trips to move that hunk.

Just got home. We towed the 4590 bailer with a truck. Simply removing the ball and replacing with a long 1" bolt with 2 nuts on it.

The swather, I drove back with my truck and same hitch pin setup. It was quite an experience with a 14' cut and a 16' 6" transport width we used the WHOLE lane and some of the next lane. Towed beautifully at 50mph the whole way home.

How do they move these things large distances ? It must be a colossal pain in the ***.

A baler would probbaly go on its side, the mower might have the tongue removed and be put sideways on a flatbed.
