Well, it's summer and time to buy a new hat. I'm so pale and hairless that I can't be uncovered in the sun. What's your favorite hat for working outdoors? I'm looking for something that is broad enough to keep the sun off my face and neck, comfortable enough to wear all day, stays on my head when working, not too hot, can be washed, and tough enough to last more than a few months of outdoor work. Is that too much to ask?

I had a Tilley hat for about 20 years, it was very durable and a good sun hat, but it was hot in the summer. Since then I have struggled through a series of hats, most don't last very long in everyday use.

Definitely cool. Easily washed. Great for keeping the sun off your neck. Given to my by the Postman; if it's good enough for the USPS, it's good enough for me!

Take a lesson from people who work in the sun all day. Like in Viet Nam or Cambodia. They wear their hats in the monsoon season so they are definitely washable.

A wide brimmed straw hat with ventilation mesh or holes in the body works perfectly. Some would call it a Coolie Hat.

Wide brim straw for me! Dollar store has them for like $2. Cheap and easily replaceable. I get 3 or 4 and change 'em out when it gets sweaty.

I have many hats, but during the hot and humid summer months, I use this type of headgear. Along with a bandana on my forehead, I wear an old white Beach Summer hat that my Wife used to wear in Florida. Works for me.

I have used a Panama style hat for years as sun exposure has caused basil cell carcinomas; can't wash it, but it provides good sun protection and allows air to circulate, my 33 year old sun started wearing one recently after a bad sun burn.

I like the old Farmer's Straw for working around the yard, and I wear an Outback style to car shows. I usually wear a baseball cap for mowing; lots of low branches and I have nearly scalped myself enough times that I prefer my view to be as unobstructed as possible.
