Hard start D120

I have had the compression release replaced twice on this pos B&S Intek engine, and I think it's okay at this point. However, when starting, the engine whines for a while, like the starter is straining, about 5-10 seconds, then suddenly cranks and usually, but not always, starts and runs fine. Sometimes it backfires before starting. I took the battery to Napa, and it checked out okay. I keep a trickle charger on it, anyway. I have checked the valve lash, and I think they are okay. Any ideas appreciated!

Sounds like the compression release is still the culprit.

Try turning the engine by hand until it just gets past compression and then try starting the engine. If turns over now points towards the POS compression release failure again.

Supposedly Briggs improved the design but I have no hard data proof of that.

Does this sound what you did? Snug- .003" Intake (lower valve), .005" Exhaust. Set when the piston is 1/4" past top dead center after the Intake valve closes. Use a dowel, pen through the spark plug hole to check the position of the piston.
