My experience has been the same. I have the same set, I use it in the drillpress and have been happy with it. I only have 10-20 holes drilled with it though, but I always use cutting oil (CRC foaming cutting oil purchased from HF).I also have a set of them. They are good but you have to be sure to securely clamp whatever you are drilling with them. Don't attempt to drill with a hand drill because if the bit catches it will twist your arm off. Same goes for using a drill press. Never try holding what you are drilling. If the bit catches it will rip it right out of your hands. Been there, done that.
I've got a set like that (mine goes up to 1 1/4") and have only used them but only to chase and clear out existing drilled holes or expand an already drilled hole by a small amount like 1/16th or so. I used a drill press with cutting oil and for my purpose they worked fine. They stayed sharp and worked well with no burring of the drill edge. I went slow speed and they cut clean.
That's all I have done with them because I lack the confidence to try to drill a new hole. They look and feel like they would do it but someone else will have to answer that part. Hope my comments help.
