Harbor Freight Tools that don't suck

Yes, I checked out our local TSC in Ramona on Friday but no luck finding one. I would have used it only occasionally anyhow, but it would have been nice to have available for that oddball usage.

A while back I asked about the 130 Cheap Tools in a Briefcase set. It's $30 presently.

I bought that back then, to have something at home in town for occasional dripping faucets etc so I could leave my better tools out at the ranch.

Let's say this stuff is homeowner grade - matched to what I intended it for, but not quite up to serious DIY tool use or shop use. Fair value for $30 because it covers so many applications.

So far my only application was loaning the kit a neighbor who had a tradesman working who needed to borrow a certain size of Allen Wrench (hex key). One example why I call the set cheap is the Crescent wrench adjustment is sloppy so it wouldn't hold size to the end of a project.

That's half $ of my Yamaha 2400. Has anyone put a oscillascope on one?

Wondering about the new Predator 3500 generator... on sale now at $649. About a 1/3rd of the price of the Honda 3000 that I have. Only 9 reviews so far on HF but all 5 star.

So, apparently these are made by 'Locin Motor Company' (China) and the same generator is branded as BE (shown), Predator (HF), Powerhorse (Northern) here, Echo, and apparently New Holland and Case IH:

Though not as comprehensive for such a wide assortment of tools as that 130pc set is I found the 64pc set pretty good quality and if I needed a cheap set of sockets and ratchets for a remote location I would probably get that one myself and piece together the other stuff. Case was decent too.

Buying it with 20% or 25% off coupon it's a pretty good deal. I paid 29.99 for the set I flipped.

Much better quality than the other ratchet/socket set the 51 pc. and miles above the 53pc tool set

The Predator generators are pretty good. My neighbor has a 3000watt version that starts right up and runs well. However, don't trust HF reviews. The reviews are probably real but HF doesn't allow many negative reviews to be published. I've reviewed a number of purchases, some positive and some negative, but only the positive ones ever show up.

Inverter technology is definitely the way to go for smaller units, for a few reasons:
Lighter weight - Much less weight in the generator coils
Quieter on light loads - they don't have to run at a fixed 'frequency of rotation' to keep AC Cycles per second constant, the inverter does that, light loads it can throttle down to almost idle speed
Can be 'stacked' to gain capacity - the inverters can be phase synchronized so the outputs can be paralleled
Much more fuel efficient due to engine only runs at power level required for load demand vs. maintaining a constant RPM
Most units also provide a higher 12VDC output then do traditional units
Much better for running electronics - doesn't cause issues due to frequency or voltage variations on load delta events

Notice in the posted video, how it almost runs down to idle with no load, the engine speed is controlled by output demand, not the demand to maintain a constant output frequency.

I've got both a legacy and inverter style 1KW class unit, the new inverter is SO MUCH quieter, lighter, and being it's a 4 stroke so no gas/oil fuss to deal with where my little legacy was a 2 stroke (most all bigger units are 4 stroke).

Now, if you really want the cake and ice cream both, look into a diesel inverter unit, if you run on a RV or use one a lot they are the 'cat's meow' - or if you're rural and have frequent overhead line down outages, a fixed gen-set w/ Auto-start and transfer would be the dream!

Anyway, that Predator is so close in design to the Honda (and others) you'd be hard pressed to know the difference other than your wallet will not be quite as skinny.

Yes, I've seen a scope trace of inverter gen-set units (not this particular one, but a similar one), it was quite clean and sinusoidal enough for the most demanding devices. Being it's an inverter, it's as clean as any UPS would be, since essentially that's what it is, a UPS inverter driven by a gen-set instead of mains or a battery bank.

I saw that unit in the last e-mail, hard to beat that price. I have a Lifan Storm Series in the 3600watt range, love the inverter setup. Not as quiet as a Honda but not far and sips fuel. Just enough to keep the house warm, hot water, some lights and a few kitchen plugs when the power is out. Mine was just over $800 on sale a few years back. I did add 10" HF pneumatic wheels to it. The little wheels are useless on anything but smooth concrete.
