A friend of mine grinds stumps part time and I had him quote some of mine. He came by today and took care of about 18 stumps for $425.00. He was here about 3.25 hours. Total measurement of the stumps was 440 inches so thats about $1.00 per inch which is a good rate. Price would be higher if you only had a couple of stumps. I was surprised how deep he went with the grinder.

This was a lot cheaper than hiring someone with a track loader to pop the stumps and haul them off.

Thats one heck of a stump grinder. I have five large stumps to remove been debating whether to rent a stump grinder or to hire it out. Looks like a machine like that would be the way to go probably wouldn't take hour to do.

I especially like how he has to step out past the safety guard to do the job.

I wonder if a rental stump grinder would have done the job. I would also rather grind stumps than dig them up, refill the hole, burn the stump, and then refill the sinkhole. Lots of work and time if a grinder would work.

I rented a large stump grinder with auto-sweep from Home Depot for $154 for 24 hours. I ground up over 80 stumps that averaged 10" apiece. It was very easy work and I look forward to renting it again in a few months after I cut some more trees down.

That is the Vermeer model with tracks and cost around 50K new. One heck of a machine and definately a lot more than you can get on the rental market.

$50K is about right. I think this one is around 60hp (?). He has a smaller 30 hp model that is on wheels.

You can rent one at our local rental place but it is small and manuel sweep. I will rent it for some small dtumps later. It rents for $185 a day but I would not use it on anything much larger than 8-10 inches.

Yep, that one has a 60 horse diesel engine and is a workhorse. I recently rented a Vermeer S252 for some small work and it would have been satisfactory except the teeth were dull. I asked the hardware store about it when I took it back and they said they never bother to sharpen the teeth. I have never bothered to rent from them again either.
