Went to home depot today & purchased some lumber & other supplies to re- build my deck. When I got home & looked at the recipt, I noticed that if I return some or all the stuff I bought, I don't get the full purchase price refunded. Examle:: lumber paid $323.19 refund value is $313.49. The must have started charging a re-stocking fee.
Anyone notice this ??

I don't know what to call it but it sucks.

Does the $323.19 include tax?

The only restocking fee that Home Depot charges is 15% on special orders. $323.19 - $313.49 = $9.70, that is only a 3% difference in the return value you posted.

I usualy don't buy lumber from Home Depot, but do shop there on a regular basis when it's the closest store to where I'm working.

This is something that I haven't noticed, but now that you've posted it, I'll be sure to look for it. If I'm doing a job that requires more then just a few pieces of wood, I go to McCoys. It's a lumber yard that is contractor friendly and automatically gives a discount to contractors that makes them allot cheaper then Home Depot and Lowes. For whatever reason, neither of those two stores seem to have any interest in working with a contractor, but prefer the home handy man. Maybe it's a price thing? charge more because they will pay more?

Thanks for the heads up.

Eddie , The last time I caled a local lumber supply & ordered wood, They sent me some much that was busted , not straight , etc,. That, I had to take most back. I just like to be able to pick out the wood so, I don't spend the time taking back the junk. Guess I'll just have to pay a little more for it. In your case, being a contractor, they are probably going to send you good stuff

kenmac,

While they will deliver what I order, I've found it works better if I go there in person and help load what I'm getting. Rarely have I had so much delivered that I bought it unseen, but when I come across warped, twisted and cracked lumber, I just set it aside and exchange it for good. Same thing with preasure treated lumber. It will look good in the store, but a day or two later, you find out that it's gonna move on you. I just buy extra with the expectation of returning it at the end of the job. If I need 100 pieces of something, I'll buy 130 and just return the extra, or bad stuff. It's better to have more on hand, then to have to go buy more and not get anything done until I do.

If you paid for the materials with a credit or debit card, that may be the CC fee that is unrefundable to the merchant. I would just ask at the customer service desk in a very nice way and try to find out the reason.

Update..... Went to H.D. today and asked about the difference in price if I return some material . They said because I bought so much they gave me a small discount of some sort. So, if I have to return any material I will get the full price of the material but, not any of the discount. Guess I should have asked b-4 I left the store but, I didn't look at the receipt until I got home

Eddie, you are half right in your explanation. It is a price thing and it is because they don't have any choice. Where I live it is HD or Lowes. Ace is here too, but they not open on weekends and their lumber prices are way out of reason.
