Like the whole panel is either on or off? I'd strongly recommend having a savvy friend look at the power leads where they're soldered to the board and checking your grounds. Spending 5 bills on a hunch can't end well.

If it sometimes works and sometimes doesnt...it sounds like problem might be in the grounding or other power leads.

Go for the Ground. What are the chances that two separate sending units would be bad. I do not have to play dumb, but I have alot of smart friends who might have the answer on here.

Solder joints on printed circuit boards are common to break and make intermittent contact with changing weather, vibration etc. That would be my first thing to look at as long as you have everything you need for the cluster to work up to the back of it (power ground, gauge inputs)..

Ok. Thanks. Im getting ready to take the panel out anyway. Checked the ground and it is ok.

if it sometimes works.. i'd look for a cold solder or bad connection, or a marginal component inthe power system feedingit.

I bet a guy that knew his way around a vom and solder iron could really help out here.

as a last resort.. a salvage yard like wengers of PA *MIGHT* be able to find one cheaper than mtd prices..

good luck

take a magnifying glass and check all solder joints real close. my sister in laws dodge caravan started acting up not starting and i traced it to the cluster and found a solder joint that was cracked in a complete circle. a little heat and some solder and the vehicle has not messed up anymore.
