I致e got a spot of rust I attacked with a poly carbide pad on my grinder; I知 not sure how to finish prepping the area before using metal primer - this isn稚 my forte. Suggestions?

I'll generally use Rust Doctor or some other rust restorer product then hit it with some machinery paint. Red primer works too. You'll never match the rest of the pan. If that matters, then repaint the whole body.

I highly recommend "Naval Jelly" brand Rust Dissolver. It looks to me that you need to get a little more aggressive with the grinder first. Then use the Naval Jelly per the directions.

After that, you need to feather the paint a little more with some fine sandpaper. Then I would use some spray can primer that is specifically for covering rust.

Then as Tom states above, hit it with some paint that is close in color. Perhaps something from JD.

Only JD paint will match, as other "wannabe jd green paints" will turn bluish green after a time.

None of the paints will match. It isn't a paint quality or even match issue really. The old paint is faded- both the gloss and color will be brighter. A quick mask n squirt to protect vs a repaint depending on expectations.

I've got naval jelly; is it a matter of using a different type pad on my grinder or going at it for longer? I can't seem to make further progress with what I am using pad-wise at the moment.

Ideally, this is a restoration project and I would not mind painting the entire machine. I need a new hood, and that takes priority before other cosmetic issues. I just want to repair this particular spot and protect the metal. Thanks!

The rust restoring primers actually will stop the rust from continuing that you can't get out of the pits. I've used the stuff for over a decade with no return of the rust.

When you speak using your grinder I would suggest you put the least aggressive wire cup brush on the grinder as possible as you do not want to wear through the metal. Using naval jelly or other rust destroyer is a good idea. There are several metal etching products as well as metal etching primer.
